GIG HARBOR, Wash. – The Camas Little League 10/11 All-Star team (2-1 at State) won their second game against Federal Way, the defending State champions, Monday night, 7-6, in an intense battle.

Team Manager Andy Ott said Camas pitcher Tyler Forner started on the mound and went 2/3 of an inning and was relieved by Kolby Broadbent, who went the distance and closed the game.

Federal Way led 5-0 after the first half inning, hoping to defend their State title. Camas ended up scoring two runs at the bottom of the first with hits from Drew Ott, Broadbent, and Forner.  At the top of two, it was 5-2 Federal Way.

Federal Way added a run and so did Camas making it 6-3 at the bottom of the third inning. In the next inning, Broadbent hit a big two-run home run over left field, tightening the game, 6-5.

In the bottom of the fourth with two outs Camas hitter Tayler Shega had a seven-pitch walk to get on base, while Michael Quintana subbing in for AJ Ueber, had two strikes and two outs and hit a two-run home run to left center for the 7-6 lead.

Broadbent closed out the deal in the top of the fifth and sixth with some good defense behind him. Christian Knuth caught the final out on a fly ball to left with a runner on first.

Camas had hits from Ott, Broadbent, Quintana, Forner, Ueber, and Jackson Gibbs.  Broadbent struck out 3.

Camas will play their fourth game this Thursday at 7 pm against Bainbridge.

CAMAS — Camas High School Track & Field Coach Alisa Whitney Wise got more than she expected today at her local US Bank branch. With two of her sons with her, casual business turned into a surreal and frightful situation.

As she was opening an account, she heard shouting and saw an elderly gentleman spill water, …and that’s when she asked what happened.

A frightened teller told her: “We’ve just been robbed.”

Wise said the bank immediately locked the doors (about noon) and told everyone to remain in the building until police arrived.

Wise, who is usually every aware of her surroundings, said she wished she would have seen more.

“I’m usually so in touch with my surroundings,” she said. “But I didn’t see it happen, yet it happened just a few feet away from me.”

The teller told Wise the robber handed her a note with a demand for money. The visibly shaken teller said she handed him the money and he then immediately fled the scene.

Local authorities (police, sheriff’s deputies, K9 units) arrived within moments and canvassed the area — all the way to the Liberty Theatre.

The suspect is described as a man in his mid-20s and local officials are on the search to apprehend him.

Wise said the only customers at the branch were her, her two sons, Micah and Stockton, and the elderly man.

“They handled things very professionally,” said Wise. “But they were clearly shaken. I would be.”

The police questioned the customers and the employees until just before 2 pm, and then everyone was free to leave.

“I just really wished I would have seen more,” said Wise.

More details to come.

Camas, WA — More than 1,100 local members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and their friends, gathered at Doc Harris Stadium Saturday to commemorate a cherished milestone in the faith’s U.S. history — namely Pioneer Day. The annual event helps contemporary members of their faith recall the legacy 19th century members left while on trek from Illinois to what is known today as Utah.

The early members of the faith were forced numerous times to leave their homes in various mid-Western states, and they had hoped to settle in Nauvoo, Illinois. But it wasn’t meant to be, as they were persecuted, and forced to escape to Utah.

Many struggled and lost their lives in their effort to cross the Plains to arrive in the great Salt Lake Valley.

The first LDS pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in 1847, and began to built up new cities.

Local east Vancouver, Camas, and Washougal church members convened at Doc Harris Stadium on Saturday to eat, celebrate, play games and learn about early church history. There were running events, tugs-of-war, music, talks, etc.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, and has a presence in nearly every nation.

CORVALLIS, Ore. — The Camas Machine JBO Senior National baseball team won their division’s State Championship this past weekend, beating McKay 8-3 in a hard-fought tournament.

At state, the Machine needed to win five games to win the Championship.  They won their first three games handily, and then the fourth game became a long, hard-fought 10-inning battle against McKay – a team from Salem.

“They gave us probably the best game we have seen all season,” said Camas Machine’s assistant coach, Keith Upkes.  “Score was tied at 0-0 going into the seventh.  In the seventh, we scored one, and McKay as the home team answered our run with a run of their own.  Going into extra innings we were tied.  In the eighth, we quickly scored two to go ahead 3-1, they again answered our score putting up two of their own sending the game to the ninth inning tied at three. In the ninth, they shut us down and then we answered back.

“Going into the tenth we were tied at three. As visitors we scored two going into the bottom of the tenth we were up 5-3.  They quickly scored one making it 5-4, then we shut them down and prevailed with a final score of 5-4.  We advanced to the championship round on Sunday.”

But it wasnt over with McKay.  They moved into the loser’s bracket having only lost to the Machine.  According to Upkes, they won their loser’s bracket game setting up a re-match for Sunday’s championship game.

Camas Machine came out ready to roll, but couldn’t get the bat’s going along with McKay’s good execution of a short game and they prevailed 10-3 in the Championship game.

But it still wasn’t over.

Being a double elimination tournament, the Camas Machine got a second chance. With a 60-minute break in 90 degree weather, the Machine fought their way back. Behind the pitching of Brannan Meriwether and Dillon Mickalson, along with a strong defensive stand, said Upkes, and with bats that started lighting up, the Camas Machine prevailed 8-3 over McKay to win the 2013 JBO Senior National State Championship.

“It was a great feeling,” said Mike Colvin, the team’s manager. “It bodes well for the future of the sport in Camas and in the community at large. Not only did these JBO teams do well, but all three Camas Little League teams won their district championships and went to State.”
Colvin said the boys wanted something that couldn’t be given to them.“They had to earn it,” said Colvin. “They had to work really hard. Every kid stepped up and made plays. They played their hearts out.”

Until the playoff, Joe Gaudio was the team’s manager, but he left for an extended time.  Colvin took over as manager for the playoffs both District and State. Assistant coaches are Toby Mickalson and Upkes.

The Machine finished first in league play with a record of 13-1, and took first place Districts.
The Machine roster includes:
  • Ryan Behnke

  • JD Fuller
  • Grant Gaudio
