Carulli Art combines with Carulli Medicine this Saturday, March 1 with the grand opening event for Carulli Medical Clinic and Nick Carulli’s Visual Expressions Gallery. The gallery and clinic will host an open house from 7 to 10 p.m. for area residents.

As the newest entry to rapidly growing 192nd Avenue, Nick Carulli will welcome visitors to take a peek at the new facility.
Dubbed the “Doctor to the Stars” for his work as set physician for programs such as Grimm and Leverage, Dr. Nick Carulli has garnered a reputation for being an innovative, caring physician. In the past year, Dr. Carulli changed his practice, weary of the devolution of health care. In direct contrast to most clinics, he actually limits the number of patients he sees to ensure he is able to provide the time and care they deserve.
Dr. Nick Carulli explains, “With this move, I get to continue building close relationships with my patients. We get to spend quality time together, which is the key to helping them identify and achieve their personal wellness goals and enjoy a healthy, active life.”

Employing advanced diagnostics and a comprehensive wellness exam, Dr. Carulli is able to detect health issues long before symptoms arrive, potentially improving treatment options. Daniela Carulli, a Certified Health Coach, adds to the move with a personalized, holistic wellness plan and physician-directed weight loss program.

Already known for his work as a clinician, Dr. Carulli is launching his first art gallery. Nick Carulli’s Visual Expressions Gallery, adjacent to the clinic, is a showcase for local and visiting artists to share and sell their work as well as host events. Quickly winning notoriety for its unique metallic walls-  allowing for displays to change easily and regularly-  the gallery is already receiving requests from artists around the country.

Accessibility remains the key for Nick, creating a fun, comfortable space to simply enjoy art. The offerings in the gallery lend themselves exceptionally well for residential and commercial interior design projects. The gallery is open to the public and serves as wonderful distraction for patients visiting the clinic or for visitors at 192nd Station.

The Grand Opening Gala will offer Jazz from The Michael Kissinger Trio, wine from local wineries, and light bites from Applewood Catering. Local Authors, fellow artists, and business leaders from around the area will be in attendance. With Dr. Nick, you never know who might show up.
Carulli Medical Clinic and Visual Expressions Gallery is located in 192ndStation at 2115 SE 192ndAvenue Suite 110 in Camas, WA.

FEDERAL WAY, WA — The Camas High School Boys Swim team had an exhilarating first day at the State Swimming Championship on Friday, as a majority of the team advanced to Saturday’s finals. Kasey Calwell, the junior from King’s Way Christian, who practices and competes with Camas, had a significant day, and will compete again in four events  — 200 Medley Relay, 200 Individual Medley (IM), 100 Breaststroke, and the 400 Free Relay.

Kasey Calwell had a great day at Prelims. Here he competes in the 200 IM.

Lucas Ulmer is No. 2 in the 100 Fly Finals. Here he is in the 100 Back.

Calwell captured the No.2 seed (1:54.99) in the 200 IM championship finals and the No. 3 seed (58.74) in the 100 Breast finals on Saturday. Calwell will be joined by Lucas Ulmer, John Utas and Tom Utas in the 200 Medley and 400 Free Relay.

Calwell couldn’t have been happier. Ulmer was also euphoric after earning the No. 2 (51.61) in the 100 Fly finals. Ulmer also competes in the 100 Back consolation finals on Saturday.

“This is so cool,” Ulmer said. “I had a great incentive to get here. I want to see everyone do their best.”

For his part, Calwell set a goal of cracking the top 3 at these State Championship events.

He did that on Friday.

The Utas brothers will join Xianyang Yan and Colin Kuhta in the 200 Free consolation finals, and John Utas will also compete in the 50 Free consolation finals.

Kasey Calwell is the No. 3 seed in the 100 Breast going into Finals.

The Papermakers find themselves in four championship and three consolation races on Saturday.

Saturday’s 4A competition begins at 10 am at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, WA.

KELSO, WA — These young men made it look easy, but after months of intense preparation and years of conditioning, the Camas Boys Swim team made its mark Saturday and handily won this year’s District swim meet.
Camas gathered at Kelso with fellow 4A (3A schools competed separately against each other at the same meet) competitors and went into the meet with confidence, knowing their hard work would pay off – and it certainly did. Camas won the District title with 414 points, followed by Union with 314 points. Skyview earned 156 points. Evergreen and Heritage High schools also competed in the 4A division.

The Camas High Boys Swim team celebrates their victory.

Left to right: Kasey Calwell, John Utas, Jeff Fadlovich and Lucas Ulmer won the 400 Free Relay at Districts helping propel their team to a victory.

Hanford High School won the 3A division, and Camas coach Mike Bemis was voted Coach of the Year.
Guided by Bemis, the boys came to the meet very PREPARED — both mentally and physically. You can see the unity that exists between swimmers. They cheer each other on and encourage one another to do better. They were prepared mentally. They paid their dues: 140 laps every morning at 5:15 in the cold, dark pool at Lacamas Swim and Sport; eating right (at least most of the time), and having to stay up late to catch up on homework. They had the physical stamina and conditioning that gave them the edge over the competition.
Junior Kasey Calwell, who attends King’s Way Christian, but competes with the Papermakers, in particular had a good meet.
“I swept all four events,” said Calwell. “I feel good. We got it done, and now we have 10 swimmers heading to State. Our goal is to make the Top Three at state.”
That goal had Junior Lucas Ulmer momentarily surprised. As he gathered his thoughts, and reflecting on his personal and team accomplishments, he added: “Yeah, I believe we can do that. We can show State what we got. We worked out butts off to get here today.”
Camas went into Districts undefeated this year.
The Papermakers made a statement early in the meet with the 200 Yard Medley Relay. Bemis sent in Tom and John Utas, along with Ulmer and Calwell (in that order) and not only did they win the event, but broke a new meet and pool record with a time of 1:39.67.
Tom Utas is a freshman and his brother John, is a junior. Tom was beaming after the win, while keeping an eye of John, who gives each event everything.
Union’s Andrew Chang would win Event  2 – the 200 Yard Free. Chang, a Freshman, commanded the event coming in at 1:50.75, while Papermaker Luke Albert placed second at 1:56.57 (qualifying for State) and Jeff Fadlovich placed third at 1:57.12.
Calwell barely had time to rest until he competed in his second event of the day – the 200 Yard IM. He won the event (1:58.56) and was followed by Union freshman, James Nicorici (2:10.65), and Papermaker Colin Kuhta (2:15.28).
Nicorici qualified for State in this race, as well as the 100 Fly (more on that later) and he’s a bit nervous.
“I’m trying not to think about the negatives when I race at State,” said Nicorici. “The 100 Fly was a close one at Districts and I just have to keep getting better. The 200 IM will be a tough one to get to consolations, but anything is possible if you put your mind to it.”

The top finishers of the 200 IM. Kasey Calwell placed first; James Nicorici, second; Colin Kuhta, third.

John Utas won the 50 Yard Free event (22.56) and it’s amazing to see him go at it.
“John gives each race everything,” said Calwell. “He’s an inspiration.”
Heritage freshman Maksim Dolbinin placed second in the 50 Free (23.29), which qualifies him for State.
Ulmer also won the 100 Fly (55.30) with Nicorici placing second (58.65) narrowly edging Papermaker Max Urbanek (58.66). It was very close.
One of the great highlights of the meet was the UTAS 100 FREE SWEEP. John Utas won the event (49.95) and was followed by younger brother, Tom (51.27). Dolbinin placed third.
Union’s Chang wasn’t done, as he also won the 500 Free (5:02.88). He was followed by Camas freshman Jeff Fadlovich (5:12.47), and both will compete at State this coming weekend. Papermaker Noah Macia placed third in the 500 Free.
Camas won the 200 Yard Free Relay with Xianguang Yan, Tom Utas, Colin Kuhta and Luke Albert, clocking in at 1:35.30. Union’s relay team placed second at 1:38.30.

Tom Utas, and Colin Kuhta.
Ulmer did it again in the 100 Yard Backstroke, handily winning that event with a time of 56.46 seconds. He was followed by fellow Papermaker Nicholas Burton (1:05.97).
In the 100 Yard Breaststroke, Calwell would earn his third medal of the meet, with a time of 1:02.46. Tom Utas placed second at 106.44.
“Tom Utas has done an amazing job and he’s doing it as a freshman,” said Bemis.
Former Papermaker parent, Doug Kabel, agreed. “It’s been fun to see reports on Tom Utas and the solid freshman we have.”
And, in the final event of the day, Camas sent in John Utas, Calwell, Fadlovich and Ulmer to finish business.
The four teens won the 400 Yard Free in style and their 3:21.52 time was a new meet record. The Union team placed second with a time of 3:30.99.
Individual event awards were handed out as the meet progressed. After events concluded the boys received their trophy and posed for multiple photos. State competition begins this Friday at Federal Way, WA. It’s a two-day event and the boys are determined to make a statement.
Tom Utas, left, placed second in the 100 Free, while Maxim Dolbinin, of Union,
placed second. John Utas placed first.

VANCOUVER — Both Camas High School Mock Trials teams swept their respective divisions Thursday night winning the annual District tournament, which was held at the Clark County Courthouse.
The teams, which are coached by Liberty Middle School teacher, Jackie Hoefer, have been preparing their case for months, and now look forward to competing at State in six weeks.
At the final awards ceremony held Thursday night, Camas senior Zane Shariff won the Division 1 Best Witness award, and was tied with Sarah Kaufman, of Ridgefield.
Savannah Deoschand, of Camas, won the Division 2 Best Witness award.

Both Camas Mock Trials teams at the Clark County Courthouse.

Camas Junior, Matt Svilar  won the Division 1 Best Attorney award and Baylee Allen, of Camas, was tied with Cody Hipskind, of Columbia White Salmon, to win the Division 2 Best Attorney award.

The teens shifted roles throughout six separate trials about a fictitious murder care of one Rosa Bud. Both the prosecution and defense teams had to contend with the prosecution of Jan Jasper, who was accused of criminal assistance of murder in the first degree.

It was a tough case to prosecute, said one of the jurors, who is a real-life attorney.

During a final session in court.
The Mock Trial teams had to prepare prosecutions, as well as defenses. Each team produced documents and witnesses, as well as raise objections during witness testimony.
In all, eight high schools competed in the two-day annual event, which is designed to teach students how the legal system works. Real judges presided over each trial with real attorneys acting as jurors.
Camas was represented by two teams: Team A and Team F. The team A prosecution was comprised of Haley Kendall, Matt Svilar, and Zane Shariff. Their witnesses included Anna Roche, Thomas Hudson, Claire Parker, and Acacia Mays. And it was incredible to see how well the students prepared.
The Team A defense was comprised of Erin Tully, Matt Svilar and Max Urbanek. Their witnesses included Zane Shariff, Taylor Hudson, Emily Neale and Ewan Parker.
Team F was comprised of Baylee Allen, Nicole Buckley, Beth Abbay and Matt Abbay, who served as attorneys. The Team F witnesses were: Savannah Deochand, Sandra Maszak, Colby Allen, and Matt Abbay (who doubled as a witness), as well as Nicole Buckley (who also doubled as a witness).
The Mock Trials program is not an officially offered course at Camas, so the kids practice on Monday evenings and Saturday mornings for several months. They do this all voluntarily.
The Mock Trials event itself is sponsored by the YMCA and has been presided over by Judge Lewis for 25 years.
Hoefer has been coaching the team for seven years and feels it’s a great opportunity.
“They work really hard and it shows,” she said. “It’s a joy to do this.”
Svilar was feeling great after his award.
“This was fantastic,” he said. “This was so much fun. I’m thinking about becoming an attorney.”
After each trial, the judges and jurors critiqued their performances, and provided guidance on how to improve. However, they gave the students many accolades and one judge even said: “You guys are better prepared than a lot of actual attorneys. Well done!”

KELSO — The undefeated Camas Boys Swim team heads up to Kelso tonight to defend their District title this afternoon. The Papermakers will compete in preliminaries today in events that will gather 3A and 4A teams at the pool.
