The Camas Lacrosse Boys play their first game of the regular season Friday, March 15 at 8 pm at Doc Harris Stadium vs. Selah. The boys have been practicing for two months, and just completed a successful tournament. The newly-formed, 28-member team is excited about the season.

Camas LAX defensive player (long-stick) Nick Elliott is “excited and nervous” about their first game. The boys will compete in 14 games this season.

The team is coached by Jim Avino and Nick Ortiz.

Several members of the Columbia River Swim Team (CRST) are competing in the 2013 Speedo Western Zone Champions, or commonly called “Senior Sectionals” at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

The event lasts four days and includes high-level swimmers from 12 states, according to Doug Lombard, co-founder of CRST. The swimmers included high school and college stars, as well as former Olympians.

“You have to be proficient and fast to even get there,” said Lombard.

The event is considered one step below Nationals and several of the swimmers are currently trying to attain Junior National and Olympic trials cuts.

Kasey Calwell (shown in this photo), who attends King’s Way and also swims for Camas High School, is competing in multiple events, alongside several of this teammates, including: Eric Bugna, Chris Xue, Alex Suk, Julia Sanders, Darya Samlee, Anna Pannebianco, and Andrea Young.

Calwell swam the 200 Breast and 100 Free today, and will compete in the 400 IM on Thursday, and the 100 Back and 100 Breast on Saturday. On Sunday, he competes in the 200 IM.

“So far today was great,” said Calwell. “I dropped three seconds in the 200 Breast and a tad in the Free. This is a crazy fast meet.”

The Camas High School JV Baseball team won their season opener against Goldendale, 4-0. The Papermaker pitching dominated the game Tuesday night as Drew Watson, Chase Gallagher and Sam Jones all played a precision game.

Sam Jones, Drew Watson, Carson Dunn and Aaron Eyler scored for the Papermakers. Johnnie Beets and Nick Murawski each had one RBI.

“Superb pitching and some great hitting won the night,” said Varsity Head Coach Joe Hallead. “They played a clean game.”

The 7-inning game was finished in 90 minutes so both teams agreed to a second, unofficial game. The Papermakers won that game, as well.

The final two performances of the play “Into the Woods” by CHS Theatre are happening this Saturday, March 9th at 2 pm and at 7 pm. It’s a fun play that brings your favorite fairy tale characters onto one stage!
CHS Theatre is located at Camas High School. The play is directed by Sean Kelly, and has a great cast.
The play is accompanied by members of the CHS Band, with some great strings.

About the Play

Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. The musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault fairy tales, exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. The main characters are taken from “Little Red Riding Hood“, “Jack and the Beanstalk“, “Rapunzel“, and “Cinderella“, as well as several others. The musical is tied together by an original story involving a childless baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family, their interaction with a witch who has placed a curse on them, and their interaction with other storybook characters during their journey.
The musical debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986 and premiered on Broadway on November 5, 1987, where it won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical (Joanna Gleason), in a year dominated by The Phantom of the Opera (1988). The musical has since been produced many times, with a 1988 US national tour, a 1990 West End production, a 1997 tenth anniversary concert, a 2002 Broadway revival, a 2010 London revival and in 2012 as part of New York City’s outdoor Shakespeare in the Park series.
