Camas — The town is fired up and ready watch their Papermakers play Evergreen tonight at 7 pm at Doc Harris Stadium. The Papermakers (3-0) grow stronger each week. In this photo, Varsity Head Coach, Jon Eagle, talks to the players post-game (after the Federal Way game).

Vancouver— Swimmers Kasey Calwell, a Senior at Camas High School and Chris Xue, a Senior at Mountainview High School, have been named Scholastic All-Americans by USA Swimming. Calwell and Xue are among only 865 boys nationally, and among fewer than 200 boys in the Western Zone to qualify.  Applicants must be a USA Swimming athlete and have qualifying times equal to a Junior National Bonus time standard, and have a minimum 3.5 GPA. Both boys have 4.0 averages. Nearly 70 percent of all winners have a 4.0 average.

Calwell and Xue are the only swimmers, male or female, from Clark County to be awarded this distinction.

Both are actively being recruited by colleges from all over the country. Xue is a 50 Freestyler and Calwell an Individual Medley and Breaststroke specialist. Calwell will be attending Winter Junior Nationals in December, in Federal Way.

In addition, both have excelled on their respective high school teams over the past three years; and both have competed and performed well at State competition.

They are both coached by Darlene Hill of Columbia River Swim Team in Vancouver.
“I’m honored by the award,” said Calwell, who is considering several colleges.

This is a video report on the Scouting adventures of two local Camas scout troops (496 and 499), and one from Medford, at Camp Baldwin, at Durfur, OR, which is near Mt. Hood. The boys left on July 14 and spent six days camping. They earned dozens of merit badges, went on high adventure outings, and several did the mile swim and the early Thursday morning Polar Bear Swim.

“We had the most amazing time at Baldwin,” said Jefferson Jackson, a 13-year-old Star Scout. “The weather was perfect. It was really hot during the day, but we had lots of shade, and got to spend a lot of time playing in the lake, and doing water merit badges. At night, it only got down to the low 60s, so we slept really well. Plus, our troop is filled with great guys, and amazing leaders.”

His buddy, Zach Terry, agreed.

“We had the most fun at Camp Baldwin,” Terry said. “Even the food tasted good. We got to make our own meals, and we took shifts during the week to see who would cook. Cleaning wasn’t so much fun, but the whole feeling at Camp Baldwin is a good one. I’m glad we got to go. I hope we go back next year.”

The group was led by local orthodontist, Trevor Allen, who started volunteering as a Scoutmaster last year.

“It’s a great group of boys,” said Allen. “They really work as a team. There’s not friction or backbiting. They are really good friends.”

Camp Baldwin is one of 18 properties owned by the Cascade Pacific Council, of the Boy Scouts of America. Boys ages 11-18 participate in the program earning rank advancements and merit badges with the goal of attaining the highest youth rank of Eagle Scout. Boy Scouts serve local communities throughout America and the world.

VANCOUVER, WA — The Intermediate (50/70) Division from Camas Little League made a statement this weekend.
The Camas Little League 50/70 All-Stars won big Sunday evening against Columbia, 15-3, in five innings to clinch the District 4 Championship title for their division. The win earns the 12 boys the opportunity to compete at State competition this weekend at Snohomish, WA.

The boys played Columbia earlier in the day and narrowly lost, 6-5. After a hearty lunch, Camas brought their bats back in the late afternoon game and made a statement, scoring six runs at the top of the first inning. While Columbia burned up several pitchers, Camas only pitched Billy Schuldt, but had Christian Geigenmiller warming up in the bull pen. Grant Heiser caught the entire game.

At Sunday’s first game, Mitchell McKowan pitched half the game, and was relieved by Jake Taylor.

The boys began their tournament Friday night against Columbia, as well. Luke Brewer was a workhorse on the mound, throwing 95 pitches. Geigenmiller closed the game.
The boys executed an excellent defensive game, communicating well with each other, and making smart plays throughout.

Little League’s  50/70 division, in its third year, is designed to help the players adjust from the standard Little League regulation field (for ages 5-12) to the much larger high school full-size regulation field. The 50/70 team is managed by Brendan Ford, who has coached at Camas Little League for eight seasons. The team is also coached by Mark Trupp and Casey Taylor.

Ford’s regular season team, called the Camas Fuel, also won first place in the division this season.

The State tournament, which begins July 5, includes seven districts from across Washington state.

The new division is steadily growing among leagues across the country. To learn more, visit www.camasll.com

The Camas Varsity Lacrosse team kicked off their second season Friday night with a shut out against Forest Grove, 14-0 at Cardon Field.

The Camas boys looked good and plowed right through Forest Grove’s defenses all night. Bryce Tabbut (#12) made the first goal of the night within the first two minutes of play, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Moments later, Gage Garrett (#52) scored the second goal with an assist by Austin Garwood (#1). Garrett would make the third goal, followed by Tabbutt with goal four, and the fifth again by Garrett.

Camas made its statement quickly and was ahead by 5 by the end of the first quarter.
“The boys have been working really hard,” said Head Coach, Jim Avino. “They’ve gotten more aggressive and it showed tonight.”
Garwood got the sixth goal of the night, half way into the second quarter, as Forest Grove had its best defensive showing of the night. Garrett’s aggressive play earned him a foul and he was sidelined moments after Garwood’s goal. Garwood made goal seven for his team a few minutes later, and was followed by Matt Welinski (#9) who made goal eight for Camas.

Grayson Windle (#22) celebrates after making his first goal of the season.
By halftime, Camas was ahead 8-0.
Tabbut scored the fist goal of the second half (goal nine), and then Zach Quist (#11) made a statement with his first goal of the night half way into the third quarter. Goal 11 was made shortly after by Grayson Windle (#22).  Quist wasn’t done yet and scored goal 12.
Freshman Keaton Sturbelle (#44) made his first goal of the season (goal 13) with an assist by Nick Elliott (#5). The final goal of the night was made by Garwood, at the end of the third quarter.

FEDERAL WAY, WA — The Camas High School Boys Swim team had an exhilarating first day at the State Swimming Championship on Friday, as a majority of the team advanced to Saturday’s finals. Kasey Calwell, the junior from King’s Way Christian, who practices and competes with Camas, had a significant day, and will compete again in four events  — 200 Medley Relay, 200 Individual Medley (IM), 100 Breaststroke, and the 400 Free Relay.

Kasey Calwell had a great day at Prelims. Here he competes in the 200 IM.

Lucas Ulmer is No. 2 in the 100 Fly Finals. Here he is in the 100 Back.

Calwell captured the No.2 seed (1:54.99) in the 200 IM championship finals and the No. 3 seed (58.74) in the 100 Breast finals on Saturday. Calwell will be joined by Lucas Ulmer, John Utas and Tom Utas in the 200 Medley and 400 Free Relay.

Calwell couldn’t have been happier. Ulmer was also euphoric after earning the No. 2 (51.61) in the 100 Fly finals. Ulmer also competes in the 100 Back consolation finals on Saturday.

“This is so cool,” Ulmer said. “I had a great incentive to get here. I want to see everyone do their best.”

For his part, Calwell set a goal of cracking the top 3 at these State Championship events.

He did that on Friday.

The Utas brothers will join Xianyang Yan and Colin Kuhta in the 200 Free consolation finals, and John Utas will also compete in the 50 Free consolation finals.

Kasey Calwell is the No. 3 seed in the 100 Breast going into Finals.

The Papermakers find themselves in four championship and three consolation races on Saturday.

Saturday’s 4A competition begins at 10 am at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, WA.

KELSO, WA — These young men made it look easy, but after months of intense preparation and years of conditioning, the Camas Boys Swim team made its mark Saturday and handily won this year’s District swim meet.
Camas gathered at Kelso with fellow 4A (3A schools competed separately against each other at the same meet) competitors and went into the meet with confidence, knowing their hard work would pay off – and it certainly did. Camas won the District title with 414 points, followed by Union with 314 points. Skyview earned 156 points. Evergreen and Heritage High schools also competed in the 4A division.

The Camas High Boys Swim team celebrates their victory.

Left to right: Kasey Calwell, John Utas, Jeff Fadlovich and Lucas Ulmer won the 400 Free Relay at Districts helping propel their team to a victory.

Hanford High School won the 3A division, and Camas coach Mike Bemis was voted Coach of the Year.
Guided by Bemis, the boys came to the meet very PREPARED — both mentally and physically. You can see the unity that exists between swimmers. They cheer each other on and encourage one another to do better. They were prepared mentally. They paid their dues: 140 laps every morning at 5:15 in the cold, dark pool at Lacamas Swim and Sport; eating right (at least most of the time), and having to stay up late to catch up on homework. They had the physical stamina and conditioning that gave them the edge over the competition.
Junior Kasey Calwell, who attends King’s Way Christian, but competes with the Papermakers, in particular had a good meet.
“I swept all four events,” said Calwell. “I feel good. We got it done, and now we have 10 swimmers heading to State. Our goal is to make the Top Three at state.”
That goal had Junior Lucas Ulmer momentarily surprised. As he gathered his thoughts, and reflecting on his personal and team accomplishments, he added: “Yeah, I believe we can do that. We can show State what we got. We worked out butts off to get here today.”
Camas went into Districts undefeated this year.
The Papermakers made a statement early in the meet with the 200 Yard Medley Relay. Bemis sent in Tom and John Utas, along with Ulmer and Calwell (in that order) and not only did they win the event, but broke a new meet and pool record with a time of 1:39.67.
Tom Utas is a freshman and his brother John, is a junior. Tom was beaming after the win, while keeping an eye of John, who gives each event everything.
Union’s Andrew Chang would win Event  2 – the 200 Yard Free. Chang, a Freshman, commanded the event coming in at 1:50.75, while Papermaker Luke Albert placed second at 1:56.57 (qualifying for State) and Jeff Fadlovich placed third at 1:57.12.
Calwell barely had time to rest until he competed in his second event of the day – the 200 Yard IM. He won the event (1:58.56) and was followed by Union freshman, James Nicorici (2:10.65), and Papermaker Colin Kuhta (2:15.28).
Nicorici qualified for State in this race, as well as the 100 Fly (more on that later) and he’s a bit nervous.
“I’m trying not to think about the negatives when I race at State,” said Nicorici. “The 100 Fly was a close one at Districts and I just have to keep getting better. The 200 IM will be a tough one to get to consolations, but anything is possible if you put your mind to it.”

The top finishers of the 200 IM. Kasey Calwell placed first; James Nicorici, second; Colin Kuhta, third.

John Utas won the 50 Yard Free event (22.56) and it’s amazing to see him go at it.
“John gives each race everything,” said Calwell. “He’s an inspiration.”
Heritage freshman Maksim Dolbinin placed second in the 50 Free (23.29), which qualifies him for State.
Ulmer also won the 100 Fly (55.30) with Nicorici placing second (58.65) narrowly edging Papermaker Max Urbanek (58.66). It was very close.
One of the great highlights of the meet was the UTAS 100 FREE SWEEP. John Utas won the event (49.95) and was followed by younger brother, Tom (51.27). Dolbinin placed third.
Union’s Chang wasn’t done, as he also won the 500 Free (5:02.88). He was followed by Camas freshman Jeff Fadlovich (5:12.47), and both will compete at State this coming weekend. Papermaker Noah Macia placed third in the 500 Free.
Camas won the 200 Yard Free Relay with Xianguang Yan, Tom Utas, Colin Kuhta and Luke Albert, clocking in at 1:35.30. Union’s relay team placed second at 1:38.30.

Tom Utas, and Colin Kuhta.
Ulmer did it again in the 100 Yard Backstroke, handily winning that event with a time of 56.46 seconds. He was followed by fellow Papermaker Nicholas Burton (1:05.97).
In the 100 Yard Breaststroke, Calwell would earn his third medal of the meet, with a time of 1:02.46. Tom Utas placed second at 106.44.
“Tom Utas has done an amazing job and he’s doing it as a freshman,” said Bemis.
Former Papermaker parent, Doug Kabel, agreed. “It’s been fun to see reports on Tom Utas and the solid freshman we have.”
And, in the final event of the day, Camas sent in John Utas, Calwell, Fadlovich and Ulmer to finish business.
The four teens won the 400 Yard Free in style and their 3:21.52 time was a new meet record. The Union team placed second with a time of 3:30.99.
Individual event awards were handed out as the meet progressed. After events concluded the boys received their trophy and posed for multiple photos. State competition begins this Friday at Federal Way, WA. It’s a two-day event and the boys are determined to make a statement.
Tom Utas, left, placed second in the 100 Free, while Maxim Dolbinin, of Union,
placed second. John Utas placed first.

KELSO — The undefeated Camas Boys Swim team heads up to Kelso tonight to defend their District title this afternoon. The Papermakers will compete in preliminaries today in events that will gather 3A and 4A teams at the pool.
