Swimming: Swimsuit, Caps On the Basketball Court

LONGVIEW, WA — This is a video about the Camas High School Boy’s Swim Team adventures at the Southwest Washington Swimming Invitational, which had some major glitches. Because of a septic overflow, the meet was suspended for an hour, and the athletes ended up playing hoops in swimsuits and caps. Several even wore their Speedos on the court. It was hilarious!

Plus, it didn’t help matters that some of the athletes tampered with drains, causing the problems to increase.

The athletes resumed the intense competition after the sewage overflow was cleaned up, and the pool was deemed safe (meeting health codes) by meet officials.

Swimming in Review

“Overall, it was a great meet,” said Jeff Fadlovich, who made some personal records at Longview. “Our team is pretty young, but we’re making great strides with our freshmen and sophomores. People like Mark Kim, and Eric Wu are making a huge difference, especially after losing State champions Lucas Ulmer and Kasey Calwell.”

Camas has been building up its program over the last 7-8 years, drawing talent from club swimmers who have been active in the sport most of their young lives.

Camas did end up winning the Invitational, by a large margin.

Camas Boys Swim Team Wins District Championship

KELSO, WA – The Camas Boys Swim Team won the 4A District Championship Saturday at Kelso High School, beating five other schools and breaking multiple records along the way. In total, the Papermakers earned 398 points, as several get ready for State competition this coming weekend.

The Papermakers got off to a great start with the 200 Medley Relay, placing first (1:40.27) in the first event of the meet. The relay team consisted of Kasey Calwell, John Utas, Lucas Ulmer, and Tom Utas. Columbia River placed second.
In Event 2, the 200 Free, Camas Freshman, Mark Kim, set a new meet record (1:46.43). Stuart Sardo, of Mountain View, placed second. Papermaker Luke Albert placed third.
“I’ve had a great season,” said Albert. “I’ve really increased my times. I’ve gotten better times in the 200. Overall, it was a good competition. I look forward to State.”
Calwell would set another meet record in the 200 IM (1:56.11) moments later. Skyview’s Jake Breuer placed second.
Mountain View’s Chris Xue won the 50 Free (1:21.56) and was closely followed by Max Dolbinin, of Heritage.
Ulmer set a new District meet record in the 100 Fly (53.04). He narrowly edged Union’s Andrew Chang (53.68).
Xue and Dolbinin duked it out again in the 100 Free, with Xue winning (47.97). Dolbinin placed second (49.22). Tom Utas placed third and made a state cut.
Kim beat out the competition in the 500 Free (4:47.46). Papermaker Jeff Fadlovich placed second (5:07.03) and Papermaker Max Crowson placed third (5:24.17).

The Camas 200 Free Relay team set a new meet and pool record (1:29.49) with their victory in this event. The team consisted of John Utas, Ulmer, Tom Utas and Kim. Mountain View placed second (1:31.84). Finn McClone, of Camas, placed third.
Ulmer also won the 100 Back event (56.56) and was followed by Fadlovich (57.2).

Swim Team Reflection

“It’s been a real successful meet,” said Ulmer. “We’ve all worked well together, and I’ve loved it. It’s my last meet at this pool, and we’ve made the best of it. These past four years have been an amazing experience, and it’s been so great getting to know the swimmers from all the other schools.”
Calwell won the 100 Breast event (59.08), but fell just half a second of setting a meet record. Skyview’s Jake Breuer placed second (1:01.75).
The Camas boys also set a new meet record in the 400 Free Relay (3:21.33), which was the final event of the meet. The team included Calwell, Kim, Luke Albert and Fadlovich.
Camas Coach, Mike Bemis, said they’re sending 8 swimmers to State this weekend.
“We’ve had a great meet,” Bemis added. “The boys really stepped it up.”
State competition will be at Federal Way, WA.

Prairie Senior Hamlik Breaks 2 Kelso Meet Records

KELSO, WA — It was a great night for Prairie senior Jaron Hamlik, who broke two meet records, a pool record and made State qualifying times at Friday’s Kelso Invitational.

Hamlik blasted his way through the 50 Free (22.10) breaking a 13-month old record, previously held by Chris Xue. Hamlik’s time not only broke a meet record, but also a pool record, and qualified him for State.

He also broke a meet record in the 100 Fly (53.24) and also made a State cut in that event, as well. The meet record was previously held by former Skyview swimmer, Eric Bugna. His time was 54.42.

“It felt really good,” Hamlik said. “It was the fastest start I’ve ever had.”

Prairie Senior Has Work Ethic

His coach, Mike Bemis, said Hamlik continues to be dedicated to excellent practices and behavior, just as he has for many seasons.

“He’s an incredibly hard worker,” Bemis said. “He has tremendous work ethic. And this was his day.”

And, Lucas Ulmer, a teammate from both the high school and club (Columbia River Swim Team, or CRST) teams, has nothing but high praise for his friend.

“Jaron is a competitor,” said Ulmer.

Lacamas Red Wins District Championship

The Lacamas Red (9-10 year-old division) won the District 4 Championship game at Evergreen Sunday, 7-4, against East County.

Home team Lacamas kept East County from scoring at the top of the first, and then turned around and put three on the board at the bottom of the inning. Dante Humble got on base and Caden Wengler hit a line drive walk off double and brought Humble home.

Immediately after Josh Mansur hit one over the fence and put two more on the board. By the top of 2, Lacamas was ahead 3-0.

The Lacamas defense showed plenty of strength, and there was excellent fielding by third baseman, Christian Knuth, second baseman Andrew Ott and first baseman Jackson Day. Wengler’s pitching was also solid. And Humble’s catching was superb.

East County scored one the next inning. East County came ready to hit, and they did. They also had some excellent pitching.

East County held Lacamas until the fourth inning, where Jordan Geigenmiller bunted his way to first. Tyler Forner hit a double and advanced Geigenmiller.

Kolby Broadbent walked and bases were loaded. Mansur moved the runners and Geigenmiller scored run No. 4. Knuth hit a single, and Jake Blair hit a double, bringing in three more runs. The score was 7-1 at the bottom of the first.

East County scored three runs in the fifth inning, in part due to Lacamas errors. It gave Lacamas a good scare, but they battled back to shut down East County.

Josh Mansur was brought in to relieve Wengler and he was able to close the game at the bottom of the sixth, winning 7-4.

“It feels good to get the win,” said manager Jeff Mansur. “We’ve all been working hard for this.”

Coach John Blair said: “Isn’t this great? We love this.”

Following the game, Lacamas was presented with medals and their championship banner. And East County, who played a solid game, were presented with their second place medals.

“East County gave us our biggest challenge,” said Andy Ott. “It was a good game.”

The undefeated Lacamas Red team heads to Auburn, Washington, next Saturday for the opening of the Washington state championship.
