The Camas High School JV Baseball team won their season opener against Goldendale, 4-0. The Papermaker pitching dominated the game Tuesday night as Drew Watson, Chase Gallagher and Sam Jones all played a precision game.

Sam Jones, Drew Watson, Carson Dunn and Aaron Eyler scored for the Papermakers. Johnnie Beets and Nick Murawski each had one RBI.

“Superb pitching and some great hitting won the night,” said Varsity Head Coach Joe Hallead. “They played a clean game.”

The 7-inning game was finished in 90 minutes so both teams agreed to a second, unofficial game. The Papermakers won that game, as well.

The WSA Arsenal U16 Boys Premier soccer team had a very successful run in the Virginia Mason WA Youth Soccer Challenge Cup, finishing as champions on February 10 at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, WA. They will move on to represent Washington in the Presidents Cup Region IV tournament in Boise Idaho in June.

The team advanced to the Finals by beating Harbor Premier B96 by a score of 1-0 on Saturday February 9 in the semi-finals. Riley Brannon scored the lone goal following up on his blocked shot by Harbor’s keeper.

On Sunday, WSA Arsenal beat Crossfire Premier for the championship — with goals from Ben Klave, Carlos Bravo, and Dmitriy Tkachenko. Ben opened the score line to take the 1 lead. Crossfire equalized a short time later and the half finished 1-1. Carlos Bravo scored 2 goals in the second half as Arsenal took control. Dmitriy finished off a cross with a header in the final minute of the game to win the championship with a score of 4-1.”

“The club is very proud of this team’s accomplishments, both in winning a state championship but also for all of their hard work the past 3 years, moving from the RCL Division 4 to now playing in D2,” said Gary Osterhage, CWSA Director of Coaching.

Tye Lommasson

Congratulations to Tye Lommasson who placed second in the state at 126 pounds this weekend at the 25th annual Mat Classic in the Tacoma Dome! Tye became only the second Camas wrestler in over 10 years to wrestle in the State Finals, and he became the first 4A Camas finalist ever.

In girls action, congratulations to Tye’s sister, Taryn, for earning a rare third trip to state this past weekend. While she did not place, qualifying for state three times is a great achievement.

FEDERAL WAY, WA — The Camas Boys Swim Team capped off a stellar season placing seventh overall, and dropping times at the 4A State Boys Swim and Diving Championships at the King County Aquatic Center this weekend.

This was the team’s first time competing in 4A, and placing seventh overall was the best state performance for the CHS Boys team. Last year, they placed ninth overall.

Camas sent eight to State, and seven qualified for finals on Saturday night. By the time the last event ended, the boys were exhausted, but had a lot to show for themselves. They entered State buoyed by clinching the District Championship, and felt the meet would be a success.

It was.

John Utas
The Papermakers first made it to the podium in the 200-yard medley relay, with Kasey Calwell, Jake Yraceburu, John Utas, and Lucas Ulmer, and placing fourth with a time of 1:38.20.

Calwell, who swims for Camas, but attends King’s Way, also finished fourth in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.70, shaving time off a personal record he just made at Districts.

“I feel really great about it,” said Calwell. “It was really fun to see people achieve their goals – and so many dropped time.”

In the 100 Breastroke, Calwell came in at 59.96 seconds. Yraceburu competed in the same event, and placed seventh overall.

The boys also took home a medal in the 400 Free Relay, placing seventh with a time of 3:17.26. Seth Albert, Trent Harimoto, Kasey Calwell and Lucas Ulmer competed in that event together.

Camas just missed the podium in the 200-yard relay, placing ninth, with a time of 1:32.18.

The boys also received academic honors at the event for achieving higher than a cumulative 3.6 GPA as a team. It’s a very distinguish honor. The crowd cheered them on.

“They’re a good group of kids,” said Coach Mike Bemis. “They work hard in the pool and at school. It’s all paying off.”

In all, the following CHS swimmers went to State: Max Urbanek, Xianguang Yan, Lucas Ulmer, Seth Albert, Jake Yraceburu, Kasey Calwell, Trent Harimoto, and John Utas.

I thought it was a great meet, said Bugna. “Really solid best times. Hoping to get even better times at sectionals in March.”

The Camas boys earned 130.5 points, and were just a half a point shy of tying for sixth place overall.

Class 3A

Prairie swimmer Jaron Hamlik, a junior, who trains with the Camas team, earned two medals on Saturday and All-America consideration times, but wasn’t pleased with the outcome.

Hamlik placed fourth in his events, the 200 IM (1:53.24) and the 100 Back (51.51), and was clearly discouraged. “I really wanted to go faster,” he said.

Teams From All Over Washington

More than 30 schools from all over Washington state competed at the event this past weekend. There will be shorter stories about several other teams on the Lacamas Magazine Facebook page.

“It was a good learning experience for our team as a whole, we had no seniors go to state, so everybody is returning,” said Brian Wright, of Kentwood High School. “We should come back even stronger next year.”

The Camas High School Wrestling team placed fifth in regionals this past weekend, and qualified four wrestlers for the upcoming State Tournament.

Papermakers Tye Lommasson and Austin Miller became Camas’ first regional champs in over four years.  And Bryant Elliott and Dakota Safford also qualified for state by placing fourth in their respective weight classes.  Seniors Vicente Huber and Andrew Duffy rounded out our regional placers by placing fifth and sixth.

The top qualifiers compete at the Wrestling State Tournament this Saturday at the Tacoma Dome.

Congratulations also go out to our girls’ wrestling team.  Erin Tully and Taryn Lommasson were both in action at the regional tournament held in Battleg Gound, with Taryn placing third and qualifying for her third and final trip to the Tacoma Dome in search of a top 8 placing at State.

Hoops! The Lady Papermakers keep plugging away.

On Thursday night, they clinched a spot in the bi-district tournament for the fourth straight year with a hard fought 42-30 win over Evergreen.  Brenna Khaw got 17 points and 5 assists, while Sierra Brown added 12 points and 5 rebounds.

The second quarter made up for a sluggish first quarter. Khaw scored 11 of her 17 points during the fourth quarter.

Camas outscored Evergreen 13-2 in the second quarter and led the game, 18-11 at the half.

The win advances the Lady Papermakers (12-9) against Union tonight at 6 in the District semi-final game.

The Camas High School Boys Swim team won their fourth consecutive District title Thursday at Propstra Pool, with a final score of 459, soundly beating four other schools and finishing off a dominate season.

The Papermakers earned first place finishes in nine of 11 events, and Kasey Calwell earned a personal record in the 200 IM, with a time of 1:58.25, dropping four seconds off his time. Calwell swims for Camas, but attends King’s Way Christian School in Vancouver.

Skyview’s Eric Bugna won the two other events, the 100 Fly with a time of 53.04, in a neck-and-neck race with Lucas Ulmer, of Camas, as well as the 100 Backstroke. The two are best friends and fierce competitors.

Camas got off to a great start with the 200 Medley Relay, which consisted of Calwell, Jake Yraceburu, Ulmer and John Utas. The team finished first with 1:46.85. Skyview’s relay team placed second, and consisted of Bugna, Jake Breuer, Mason Leavitt, and Nick Anderson. Union, Heritage and Evergreen also competed in Thursday’s meet.

Seth Albert won the 200 Free with a time of 1:53.9, while Papermaker Max Urbanek placed second.

“It just feels so great,” said Albert. “I came here ready to compete and win. It’s been a great meet.”

Calwell was beaming after his victory in the 200 IM. He was followed by Skyview’s Jake Breuer, who clocked in at 2:03.47, which is also a state cut.

Camas took all three top spots in the 50 Free as John Utas won with a time of 23.02. Yraceburu came in second, with 23.42, and Sean Yan was third at 24.14.

Albert also won the 100 Free with a time of 52.10.

Long-distance swimmer Max Urbanek was the favorite to win the 500 Free and didn’t disappoint by placing first with a time of 5:11.85. Nick Panebianco, of Camas, placed second.

Camas owned the 200 Free Relay besting Skyview and Union. The team was made up of Trent Harimoto, Sean Yan, Utas, and Albert. Their time was 1:33.26.

Xian

Bugna wasn’t about to let Camas take it all by winning the 100 Backstroke. Ulmer was a close second.

“It was a good race,” said Bugna. “It’s been fun.”

Yraceburu won the 100 Breastroke with a time of 1:01.71. “It’s been awesome to win all four years,” said Yraceburu.

The Papermakers finished off the night with a victory in the 400 Free Relay. Calwell, Yraceburu, Albert and Ulmer finished off the competition with a time of 3:25.59.

Camas Swim Coach, Mike Bemis, said: “These times are what we’re shooting for, and I think we can do even better at state.”

Event winners and those who qualified for state travel to Federal Way for the 4A State Championships next week at the King County Aquatic Center.

A Lacamas Magazine video report on the District Championships will be released soon.

PROPSTRA AQUATIC CENTER, VANCOUVER – Young Camas swimmers Ben Teames and Shicon Wen made waves Wednesday at Sub-Districts by earning qualifying times for next week’s District Championship meet.

The Sub-Districts provide lesser-experienced or new swimmers a final opportunity to earn qualifying times in events for which they compete. In addition to Teames and Wen (1:30.09 for 100 Backstroke), several Hockinson swimmers also met District cuts. Hockinson practices with Camas, and those swimmers include: Nathan Carrsow (2:15.90 for 200 Free); Bryce Croucher (29.19 for 50 Free); Davis Escola (27.83 for 50 Free); Tommy Harshaw (27.90 for 50 Free); Kennan Aho (1:21.75 for 100 Backstroke) and Landen Gullberg (1:04.92 for 100 Free).

Ben Teames
Camas freshman, Ben Teames, finishes the 100 Free at Wednesday’s
Sub-Districts. He surprised himself by moving onto Districts.

Shicon Wen
Shicon Wen, on the starting block, also moves onto Districts after
getting a better-then-expected time at Sub-Districts.

Teames surprised himself by winning his heat in the 100 Free with a time of 1:11.92. Moments earlier he competed in the 200 IM and didn’t make the cut.

After the 100 Free he wasn’t sure his time was good enough to qualify so he cleaned up, got dressed and was later notified of his achievement.

“I didn’t think it could be done,” said Teames, who just started swimming competitively this season. “It’s a great feeling! I feel much better and I’m so much stronger than I was just a couple of months ago. I’m happy I stuck with it.”

It was a major change in attitude for the 15-year-old freshman.

In November, at one of the team practices, he lamented he even signed up for the swim team, as he watched more experienced and seasoned swimmers fly past him.

“It’s so hard,” he said back then. “It’s so much harder than it looks, and I’m so slow.”

Teames signed up for swimming to condition for track, but didn’t realize what he got himself into. The team practices twice daily through the winter months.

Leslie Dahlen, the team’s assistant coach, was there Wednesday to see Teames’ victory.

“It was the most enlightening event,” she said. “The kids really came through, and Ben really was the surprise of the night. He’s worked really hard and it all came together tonight.”

Leslie is really proud of Tommy Harshaw, as well, who dropped five seconds off his 100 Free time – down to 1:05.71.

As for Teames, he’s pleased he entered the world of swimming.

“It’s made me stronger, more competitive and I’m better conditioned,” he said. “I’m glad I did this.”

Teames and his teammates compete next Thursday at the District Championship. Several of the CHS swimmers have already qualified to compete at State the following week.

Although the Camas High School swim team lost their final meet of the regular season to Skyview on Saturday there was one big silver lining –- and that would be CHS swimmer, Kasey Calwell, who made three state qualifying times at the same meet.
Camas went into their last meet undefeated so the loss was stinging, but the team was beset by illness and had less than half their numbers.

Kasey Calwell
Kasey Calwell completes a race at a recent meet.

Calwell, a tall sophomore, who also swims for Columbia River Swim Team, was ecstatic about his performance. He earned state cuts in three events: the 500m free, 100m free and the 100m breaststroke. For the 500m free he clocked in at 4:57.60; his time for the 100m free, which was his portion of a relay, was 49.98; and for the 100m breaststroke, he timed in at 1:03.27.  Pretty amazing.

Kasey Calwell swims the breastroke.

“I felt really good about the times,” said Calwell. “I’ve never earned three state cuts in one meet. I felt strong and ready to go.”

The times earn him spots at the State meet in February. Calwell will be competing in the 200 IM, the 100 breastroke, and two relays. He’s pretty excited. And Calwell is also pleased with the CHS swim team overall.

“A lot of people have improved on the team,” he said. “I attribute that to experience and hard work.”

Calwell will next compete at District Championships, held on February 6, at Propstra Pool.

Camas High School Wrestling hosted Union in a tough match Wednesday night as Camas seniors were recognized for their achievements.
Varsity fell 59-12, but two seniors, Andrew Duffy and Vincente Huber, finished their home dual career with pins against Union. Junior Varsity won their match 30-28, and the girls team shut Union out 12-0.
Heach Coach Glen Hartman honored six CHS seniors for their high school achievements in the sport of wrestling. The seniors are: Andrew Duffy, Anthony Grable, Vincente Huber, Taryn Lommasson, Austin Miller, and Dakota Safford.
