Camas Places 4th Overall at Oregon Relays

Eugene, OR — Attending Track and Field events at Historic Hayward Field is always fun, and to some it’s disappointing that Camas athletes placed fourth overall at this year’s Oregon Relays, in contrast to winning it all in 2015, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.

You see, life is about balance, and Camas athletes chose to attend their junior and senior proms on Saturday, April 16, so by 4:30 pm Papermakers had left the field and went home to get ready for their big night. Points were left on the track, for sure. It’s OK.

But, until that point, the Papermakers made an impressive run, and for most of the meet they were way ahead of eventual meet winner, Summit, who won by 12 points. Grant High School placed second, and Mountain View, of Idaho, placed third. At one point, Camas was ahead by 30 points. Had they been able to stay, most observers say they would have picked up another meet victory.

“Camas should be SO incredibly proud!” said team coach, Alisa Wise. “There were the likes of Coronodo (San Diego), Mountain View of Idaho, Valor Christian of Colorado, Canadian National Athletes, Cerritos of California, Long Beach (Wilson) of California, and of course all the “bigs” of WA and OR. Camas led the entire meet …. then our kiddos needed to headed to PROM mid afternoon which left us with no more “dogs on the fight” so to speak. It was tough to sit and watch as those talented teams racked up some points against our pretty solid lead as Camas had to leave some points on the track for our amazing kiddos to attend PROM.”

“I’m amazed at the commitment level and fortitude of our athletes!” she continued. “Our athletes came and competed in every event they could up to the time they would need to leave for PROM…and then some…leaving in the afternoon, scooting home with parents to clean up and make it home. We even had one gal get her hair done IN EUGENE, run the 4 x 800m relay, then jump in the car, change into her dress on the way home and meet her group!”

There were some impressive results, such as Caliegh Lofstead’s Pole Vault numbers (2nd place at 12-09.50), the Boys 4×800 relay (2nd place) and the Camas team’s first try at the Steeplechase.

Camas Track and Field Sets Records at Oregon Relays; Finishes 9th Overall; Skyview’s Colby Gilbert Wins 3000m

The Camas High School Track & Field team finished ninth of 55 teams at the annual Oregon Relays event this past weekend at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, OR. The 55 high schools teams competed with each other alongside a Dual meet between the University of Oregon and Arkansas.

“This has been totally amazing,” said CHS sophomore, Ryan Gunther, as he watched college track stars run at the field, which is home to the Track & Field Olympic Trials. “Look who’s here and look at what they’re doing.”

Gunther competed in the 300m Hurdles near the end of the meet.

The Papermakers sent 30 of their top track and field athletes to compete at the annual Oregon Relays, and Camas continues to impress.

Gunther was in awe of college track stars Arthur Delaney (U of O), Sam Crouser (U of O), Mike Berry (U of O), among others. But he was equally impressed with his own teammates.

On Friday night, Camas’ Distance Medley Relay (DMR) team won the event and shattered the previous Oregon Relays record (for high school) earning a time of 12:02. The team comprised Alexa Efraimson, Alissa Pudlitzke, McKenzie Good, and Camille Parsons.

“Did you see how these girls came from behind?” said co-Head Track Coach Alisa Wise. “Look at what they did. We’re so proud of them.”

Gunther was equally proud of the DMR team.

“They’ve got something special,” he added. “Not sure of what they’re made of, but it’s really cool.”

Efraimson also won the 800m event, breaking the meet record, and earning 2:09.63.

“And it wasn’t even her personal record!” Gunther said, smiling. “She’s got more in the tank.”

Papermaker Maddie Woodson placed third (10:40.40) in the Freshman 3000m event, and Parsons placed third (4:50.88) in the 1500m event.

Triton Pitassi placed second in the Hammer, while Blane Behrent earned a fourth place finish in the Pole Vault.

Jordan Davis placed sixth in the 300m Hurdles, Nicole Corbett placed sixth in the Shot Put; Lauren Neff placed fifth in the High Jump and Josh Ryan placed eighth in the Triple Jump.

The Boys Distance Medley Relay team, which consisted of Tucker Boyd, Albert Plock, Jackson Cutler and Andrew Kaler placed seventh.

“Our team continues to progress and develop,” said Wise. “There’s more to come.”

In local schools, Skyview’s Colby Gilbert placed first (8:26.29) in the 3000m event. Gilbert also placed fourth in the 1500m event (3:58.84).

Skyview’s Colby Gilbert competed in multiple events, and placed first in the 3000m, and fourth in the 1500m.

Oregon Relays: 800m Event Record Broken by Camas High Runner

Camas High School sophomore Alexa Efraimson won the 800m event Saturday at Historic Hayward Field. And not only did she win with a time of 2:09.63, but she shattered the meet record by three seconds for this particular event.

In this photo, Efraimson is just starting to pull ahead of the pack. She kept going and stayed well ahead of everyone else in the race.

Oregon Relays: Camas Track & Field Top 10

The Camas Track & Field Team finished ninth overall with 56 points as the two-day event at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, OR wrapped up Saturday.

Freshman Alexa Efraimson wowed crowds with her first place finish in the 1500m run with a time of 4:34.23 just edging out her closest competitors.

“Today I wanted to push myself, but I didn’t want to take a lead until I knew I could win it, or have the potential of winning it,” Efraimson said. “I wanted to be able to present myself as not just a Freshman that’s quick but a runner that’s quick.”

Freshman Cole Zarcone placed fourth in the Freshman 100m race with a time of 11.78.

In the Triple Jump, Senior Sydney Allen got a fourth place finish at 35 feet, 9.5 inches.

Amber Corbett placed second in the Girl’s Javelin competition at 126 feet, 7.5 inches. She also scored a personal best.

Junior Andrew Kaler scored a personal best in the 1500m with a time of 4:15.09. He raced in the 3000m on Friday.

The Boy’s Sprint Medley team placed fourth, which consisted of Zarcone, Kyle Schrader, Josh Golden and John Doyle.

The CHS team competed against 45 other scoring teams and held their own, but have fared better in years past.

“I am so impressed with so many of these kids,” said Co-Head Coach Alisa Wise. “Two years ago, we won the whole thing, but to be in Top 10 is great. This is a big event and kids usually set PR’s in events like this, but that didn’t happen as much as we expected. In this big atmosphere you want them to be at or near their personal records. We want them to be consistent as we prepare for state championships.”

She attributed Efraimson’s success to her patience, training and overall personal strategy.

“She was extremely focused,” said Wise. “She was prepared.”

This was the school’s sixth time competing at Oregon Relays, which intertwines college and high school athletes at Historic Hayward Field, home to the Track & Field Olympic Trials and numerous historic events at University of Oregon.

The event itself is amazing and gathers some of the best Track & Field athletes from several states and British Columbia. CHS sent 28 of their best athletes, but several weren’t in attendance due to the Prom on April 21.

One observer from Gig Harbor said many eyes are on the Freshman this year from Camas. “Word has gotten around how good they are,” he said.

CHS Track & Field Competes at Oregon Relays at Historic Hayward Field

The Camas High School Track & Field Team competed in their first round of events at the Oregon Relays in Eugene, OR, on April 20. The setting at Historic Hayward Field was majestic with an enthusiastic crowd, sunny skies and 70-degree weather. It was amazing.

College and high school teams from several states and British Columbia compete in the annual event at Hayward Field, which is the home of the Track & Field Olympic Trials.

“This place has a lot of history,” said co-Head Coach Alisa Wise. “A lot of dreams have been realized here.”

Lyndsey Wourms and Megan Napier competed in the Girl’s 3000m race and placed tenth and 16^th, respectively. Andrew Kaler and Andrew Duffy also competed in the Boy’s 3000m race. Kaler got ninth place with a time of 9:00; and Duffy placed 11^th.

“I’m having a great time,” said Kaler. “I got nine minutes in the 3000m and I’m a bit sore but I’m excited to compete in the 1500m tomorrow.”

The Camas Girl’s Distance Medley Relay team (Camille Parsons, Kimi Knight, Austen Reiter and Alexa Efraimson) placed second with a time of 12:12.11 and broke the CHS record for that event.

The Boy’s Distance Medley Relay team (John Doyle, Kyle Schrader, Jackson Cutler and Tucker Boyd) placed ninth, and just missed scoring. First through eight place scores.

Daniel Ryan cleared his opening height in the High Jump and Paige Jackson competed in the Pole Vault. Triton Pitassi competed in the Shot Put.

In all, 28 CHS student athletes are competing at Oregon Relays this year.
