Camas 11/12 All-Star Team Wins Districts

Vancouver, WA — The Camas Little League 11/12 All-Star Baseball team handily won the District 4 Championship Monday night against Fort Vancouver with a final score of 12-2. The win propels the 14-member team onto the Washington State Little League tournament, which begins Saturday, July 15.

The undefeated (4-0) Camas team “10-runned” the competition in every tournament game.

During the Championship game, Cannon Bauman pitched the entire game — 79 pitches — and didn’t allow any runs until the fourth inning.

Offensively, Zach Blair got things going in the first inning with a base hit. A double from Justin Taylor brought Zach “Z-Train” in to score the first run of the night. Taylor stole third. Holt Williams got a base hit, bringing in Taylor to score.

At the top of the second inning, Bauman struck out three Fort batters in a row.

Tyler Stewart hit a double, and Caisen Burr followed with a double RBI, bringing Camas ahead 3-0.

Fort found their bats during the third inning, and got on base once, but the Camas defense held them.

At the bottom of the third inning, Jackson Knuth hit the only home run of the night, bringing the score to 4-0, but Camas wasn’t done yet. Hits by Bauman, Stewart, Burr, Cade Gehlen, Blair, and Carson Gilligan added another 5 runs to the scoreboard. It was Camas 9-0 by the top of four.

A little breeze was blowing for Fort during the fourth inning. They got one base hit, and a couple walks. Defensively, Bauman was showing signs of fatigue, throwing a few more balls than he had previously. Fort scored two.

Fort walked a couple Camas players, and eventually bases were loaded. The game came to a quiet stop with  two walks that gave Camas the 10-run advantage.

The team will take Tuesday off, and then continue practicing on Wednesday night as they prepare for State.

“We stayed even keeled and didn’t allow failure to determine what we did next,” said Coach Casey Taylor. “To prepare for State, we won’t let the moment overcome us. We’ll just play baseball.”

Jackson Knuth was really pleased what his team accomplished during the All-Star tournament.

“Well, we went out right from the get-go, and we just hit really well,” Knuth said. “We were focused. Fort had a great tournament. We came out and had fun.”

Events: First Friday, Camas Car Show, All-Stars

Camas July First Friday | July 7 5-8 pm

July’s First Friday is a fun celebration of dogs! July 7th, 5-8pm. Doggie talent show with prizes and new this year, a parade sponsored by Miss Nola’s Cafe with a Mardi Gras theme in honor of the Barkus Parade at Mardi Gras! How fun! There will be Cajun Zydeco music as well by The Mudbugs from 5:30-7:30pm compliments of Miss Nola’s!

Vendors, kids’ crafts with a mardi gras dog theme, a dog breed guessing activity in participating businesses, and more! There will also be a dog and owner look-alike contest! Bring your favorite pooch (leashes required) and make a fun night of it! Parade and music sponsored by Miss Nola’s Cafe and talent and look alike contests sponsored by Naturally Healthy Pet in Downtown Camas.

For the Talent Contest, the judging will be for “Most Clever”, “Most difficult”, and “Cutest” Talents. Sign up when you get to First Friday at the DCA table, up to 15 minutes before each event. Camas First Friday in July has a dog theme.

Camas Car Show | July 8 4-8:30 pm

Come stroll the beautiful streets of historic Downtown Camas and enjoy the many classic and custom cars and trucks that fill the town. Old favorites and new discoveries in this 12th annual event. Always an exceptionally fun time! This is a great event for any car enthusiast.

Camas Little League All-Stars | July 8 @ 1 pm

The Camas LL 11/12 All-Star Baseball team competes with Fort Vancouver in Game 2 of their District 4 Tournament, at David Douglas Park in Vancouver. The game begins at 1 pm.

The boys beat Cascade 13-3 in four innings during Game 1 on July 6.

Hayes Freedom High School Honors Class of 2017

Camas, WA — Hayes Freedom High School honored 41 graduates on Saturday during Commencement exercises at Liberty Middle School. The school just completed its 10th year, and featured several speakers, songs, and a special number by Jenny Huckvale, who was part of the first Hayes Freedom graduating class of 2008. The school provides opportunities for youth who thrive in smaller class sizes. Hayes Freedom High School is a community of learning with high expectations, caring and hope. Eco-Blitz at Steigerwald Lake NWR | June 17 All day

At the Eco-Blitz, scientists, families, and community members will work together to get an overall count of the plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms that live at Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The event is free and open to all ages. No experience is necessary! Volunteers will receive brief training on using the iNaturalist app and experts will be on hand to help identify species.

Alpenrose Dairyville Returns | All Summer

Oregon’s oldest family-owned dairy is bringing back a time honored annual tradition celebrating summer and the community it has called home since 1916 with the opening of Dairyville on Sunday, June 4.

The annual celebration dating back to 1956 offers families a wholesome activity every Sunday of the summer until Aug. 27 with the opportunity to explore the Pioneer Exhibit, Dairyville School, post office, Great Western Bank, and model train display. Visitors can also take a peek into the confectionary and, of course, no visit would be complete without stopping by the Ice Cream Parlor for a delicious scoop of Alpenrose ice cream.Dairyville remains free for the public and opens every Sunday from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. through Aug. 27.

Free Garbage Disposal & Recycling Day Event

Camas, WA — The city of Camas is coordinating its annual Garbage Disposal and Recycling Day event this Saturday, April 16. It’s being held in conjunction with the annual Yard Debris Disposal Day. It’s a chance to get rid of that junk in your backyard, garage, shed, etc.

The flyers attached to this article provide a list of what is acceptable, and what isn’t at the disposal sites. A donation of two canned food items is requested when dropping off items for recycling.

Floods Video: Reader Shows Local Damage

Longtime Camas, Jeff Peebles, got a closer  look at the extensive damage the heavy rain and floods have inflicted on Forest Home Road, in the heart of Camas. He captures the erosion to the foundation of part of the road, and why the road is closed indefinitely. Thanks, Mr. Peebles, for your intriguing video report.
He said the heavy pounding of rain has eroded a sub-set of the road, deeming it unsafe for car traffic.
“I can’t believe what’s happened because of all the rain we’ve been having,” said Peebles. “It was cool to capture what’s going on.”

Historical Rainfall and Floods

The area has been walloped for weeks with very heavy rain. In December, the area broke all records for most inches of rainfall, topping the 7-inch mark that was set in 1996, when the Columbia River overflowed, causing extensive damage to homes and structures along its shores.
There was also severe damage to other roads that are closer to Lacamas Lake, which crested to near flood stage during the torrential rain fall.
Local government agencies created flood zone alerts so citizens could know what areas to avoid.
“The goal is to save lives and keep people out of harm’s way,” said Washington State Representative, Liz Pike.

Landslides: WA Natural Resources Issues Warning

OLYMPIA, WA — State Representative Liz Pike, of Legislative District 18, said, according to the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the state is facing an extreme risk for landslides.
In particular, said Pike, quoting the DNR, Lewis and Thurston Counties are currently facing extreme risk for landslides, which are expected to be “frequent and widespread.”
The most recent forecasts, updated a few hours ago, show all Western Washington and some Eastern Washington counties facing extreme landslide risk.
The DNR warns that sudden changes in creek levels, cracking wood of moving rocks are strong indications of a pending landslide, and they recommend staying away from hiking trails until the ground starts to settle.
If you see a landslide or indications of one, the DNR instructs you to get into contact with your local Emergency Management Division. The direct number is 800-562-6108 or 253-512-7000.
