The Camas High School Varsity baseball team lost 8-3 yesterday to Skyview.  Dylan White hit a 3-run homerun to give the team a brief lead in the 3rd inning.  Nolan Hunt pitched four strong innings to keep the game close, but a three-run sixth inning by Skyview broke the game open.

The CHS JV team also played Skyview losing 5-0 as the Papermakers couldn’t regain momentum after an early game rally by their opponent. The boys made a real effort to score, but it wasn’t meant to be.
The Varsity Softball game against La Salle Prep didn’t happen, as they were a no-show. Papermaker Lena Richards said she and her team were ready to play, but La Salle simply didn’t come.

Thank you to Marcia Johnson, of the Camas Athletics Office, for providing information.

Both Camas Varsity and JV teams fell to Union Friday night, but it was a tale of two very different games.

Varsity held a 2-1 lead over Union until it fell apart in the fifth inning with some great hits and offensive plays by Union. By the bottom of the fifth, Union had a 6-2 lead over the Papermakers and extended that lead to 9 by game’s end.

The JV game was different. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to some stellar pitching on both sides. Camas’ Sean McClanahan held Union and was backed up by a solid Papermaker defense. Offensively, Camas made some great plays with Brennan Dyehouse sending one out deep to center. It would have been a double but Dyehouse was sent to third and then tagged out. Nick Murawski also had some great contact Friday night, but was fielded out.

Then things changed in the bottom of the fourth. Sam Jones got a base hit, stole second and made his was to third base. Sophomore Jace Bolton then sent one into right field for an RBI as Jones scored. Bolton was fielded out, but helped put a run on the board.

At the top of the fifth, McClanahan was starting to show signs of fatigue, but his team held off Union.

At the bottom of the fifth, Urbano Zea hit the ball deep into centerfield, but it was caught. Then Chase Gallagher hit one out to center for a double. Dyehouse advanced the runner but fielded out.

Jones relieved McClanahan with bases loaded and struck out a batter and then made an excellent play at home to prevent Union from scoring. Offensively, Camas wasn’t able to score again, but made a solid effort.

Then the game turned.

Union scored to tie the game at the top of seven. Then the next batter hit a double, who was advanced by the next hit to score. It was 2-1 Union.

Although the Papermakers fought back, it wasn’t enough. Union won.

Weather permitting, all three Camas High School baseball teams compete against Skyview today at 4. Varsity and JV will play at home, and the Freshman team has an away game at Skyview.

Varsity played in a Yakima tournament 10 days ago, but this is the first game of the new season.

Coach Joe Hallead is excited to see the Varsity boys play.

“They’ve been working really hard,” he said. “The JV and Freshman teams have been doing well so far this season — as both have won their first few games.”

JV hasn’t allowed a single run in three games.

The Camas High School Junior Varsity team soundly beat Hudson’s Bay Saturday afternoon 10-0 during their first away game of the new season. It was a cold, wet, windy day in downtown Vancouver.

A solid defense, some incredible hits and several HB errors allowed the Papermakers to pull away early in the game.

Camas brought their bats and make early contact, but weren’t able to score until the second inning with runs by sophomores Tyce Funk and Will Noce-Sheldon.

Camas started with Aaron Eyler on the mound and he had full support from catcher Noce-Sheldon as well as back up in the field. The Papermakers were determined to not let HB score.

Sam Jones, Sean McClanahan, Brennan Dyehouse, Eyler, Jace Bolton, Nick Murawski, Sam Johnson, and Brendan Geigenmiller all had hits. Bolton clocked one out to centerfield. It was a beautiful hit!

allow any runs at Saturday’s game against Hudson’s Bay.

Bolton

By the third inning, Dyehouse and Funk put two more on the board for a score of 4-0. And Eyler continued striking out HB batters at the bottom of 3.

At the top of the fourth, Jones, McClanahan, Jake Burns, Funk, Noce-Sheldon and Bolton all scored, putting six more on the board for a score of 10-0.

By the fifth inning, Camas switched out several players and Urbano Zea relieved Eyler, who had a stellar performance.

Sam Jones
Sam Jones slides, and kind of rolls his way home. Nicely done!

The Papermaker defense was no match for HB, who put them away after six innings. Regulation is seven, but with a 10-run lead the game ended early.

This JV’s third win of the new season.

The JV team plays Skyview this Tuesday.

WASHOUGAL — Local Little League coaches and players had the opportunity on Sunday to learn baseball techniques from coach and trainer, Dave Gasser. Members of Camas and East County Little Leagues spent threes hours learning about good base running, fielding, batting stances and more from Gasser, who is the All-time winningest coach in Oregon high school baseball history. He has won the most state championships, and was recently inducted into the Oregon Baseball Hall of Fame.

He went over coaching techniques designed to help the beginner, as well as the more advanced baseball players.

“There is a big difference between awareness and an instantaneous skillful reaction,” he said.

He worked with about 10 Little League players who were on-hand to follow through on instructions and techniques to improve hitting, fielding and, and base running.

“It was a really cool event,” said Jake Blair, a participant. “I learned a lot.”

CORVALLIS, OR — Fueled by talent, endurance, great pitching and a drive to win, the Camas Reds, a JBO-sponsored team, won their division’s state title Sunday against Keizer, 9-1.

Phillip Kassab started for Camas, who kept Keizer from scoring for three innings. Vincent Morta took the mound at the top of the fourth, and only allowed one run, near the end of the game.

The game was scoreless until the fourth inning, when Camas broke it loose, putting seven runs on the board. According to Kathy Birchem, one of the parents, just about everyone scored or got an RBI.

“It was so great to watch these boys play and win the whole thing,” she said.

The Reds won their district title a little over a week ago and went to state early this week, and dominated the tournament, 6-0.

This is the end of the line for the highly successful team, as JBO doesn’t move onto regional play.

“It’s been a tremendous run,” said Birchem. “And it’s taken a lot to get here.”

The team is coached by Adam Geaslen, and consists of the 11 players: Genya Shimada; Ryan Kempf; Vincent Morta; Taylor Birchem; Seth Delgado; AJ Geaslen; Jarrin Webb; Phillip Kassab; Bassam Kassab; Logan Miller; and Vinny Gennaro.

More details to come.
