Learn About the Downtown Camas Fire Station (#41) Replacement Project

Camas, WA — The Camas Washougal Fire Department (CWFD) is developing plans to replace the existing Fire Station 41 to ensure adequate fire and emergency medical services for the local community as population continues to grow.

A new station will serve as the headquarters for CWFD and will be located in downtown Camas, in the core of the department’s response area. Currently, the downtown Camas emergency response personnel, the Fire Marshal’s Office (FMO) and the administrative staff are decentralized; operating out of separate buildings and remote to each other. As the headquarters facility, a downtown Camas station will house response personnel, apparatuses, administrative staff and the FMO.

Why is CWFD Requesting a new Fire Station 41?

The current Fire Station 41 facility has outlived its useful life and cannot be increased in size to accommodate the needs required of a modern fire station, including:

  • Ability to withstand a significant earthquake
  • Compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
  • Space for additional firefighters/EMS personnel to meet growing demands
  • Crucial, up-to-date decontamination facilities and separation to limit firefighters’ carcinogen exposure
  • Elimination of apparatus exhaust from entering City Hall’s interior office spaces
  • Space for fire apparatus
  • Mandated safety clearances around equipment
  • Facilities for a diverse workforce (male/female changing rooms) to be consistent with diversity, equity and inclusion guidelines
  • Providing public access to emergency service crews
  • Providing parking for emergency medical drive-ins
  • Providing private medical screening and treatment area for walk-ins and drive-ins

Where will a new station be located?

After conducting a process which involved considering multiple site options that could accommodate a downtown fire station, several options dropped off the list for a variety of reasons, such as traffic impacts, topography and size, environmental impacts, and cost. This left CWFD with one preferred site to consider as a potential location: a city-owned site adjacent to City Hall and currently occupied by the City as the City Hall Annex, located at 528 NE Fourth Avenue. To maximize the available space for the fire station, City Council is considering vacating (closing) the north half of Everett Street between Third and Fourth avenues to vehicle traffic. This would provide an opportunity to use current street space for the station and create a small plaza or “pocket park” along NE Fourth Avenue that can be used for community events.

Where will the funding come from for a new station?

Funding for a new fire station will come from the sale of voter-approved bonds. Bonds are a funding mechanism for replacing capital facilities and equipment like the fire station and fire engine.

During the August Primary Election, voters will have the opportunity to decide whether to fund the new fire station through a bond-approval. This approval would fund design and construction costs for the new facility. If the bond passes, construction could begin as soon as 2025.

How much will the new station cost Camas homeowners?

The bond amount is $26.3 million based upon preliminary design and cost estimation to cover the full station replacement costs as well as a new fire engine to replace the aging fire engine currently operating out of the existing station.

The monthly cost for most homeowners in Camas will be approximately $9.33 (based upon median assessed home value of $862,000).

Our Camas 2045 Community Summit #1 Scheduled for June 12

Camas, WA — Officials with the City of Camas are encouraging residents to join their friends and neighbors for the Our Camas 2045 Community Summit #1.

The first Our Camas 2045 Community Summit will take place June 12, from 4:30-6:30 pm, at the Lacamas Lake Lodge (227 NE Lake Rd, Camas, WA 98607).

The Community Summit is part of the Our Camas 2045 and Our Downtown Camas 2045 project, which is a city-wide process to update the current Comprehensive Plan and create a Downtown Subarea Plan. Over the past four months, City leaders reached out to the community to help create a new Community Vision Statement that describes how Camas wants to grow over the next 20 years. The Visioning process provides a foundation for updating the City’s 2045 Comprehensive Plan and developing a new Downtown Subarea Plan.

At the first Community Summit, the City will report back on the outreach that took place this past spring, and they’ll unveil the draft Our Camas 2045 Vision Statement. Participants will have an opportunity to vet and refine the draft Vision Statement and identify priorities and opportunities for achieving the vision.

Outdoor Living: How to Spice Up Your Yard This Season

It’s time to get to work on revamping your yard for warmer months. Whether you like your current layout or are hoping to change things up completely, it’s a good idea to shake things up at least a little. There’s a whole range of things you can do to sustainably refresh your yard, and luckily, some of them are very simple to carry out.

Add Container Plants

Adding container plants is probably the easiest way to change your garden. If you already have container plants, add more, and make them colorful. Containers are perfect for bright annuals that require no overwintering care, and smaller pots are very portable; you can place them anywhere you want. Consider using containers for smaller edible plants like strawberries and cherry tomatoes as well.

Build Arbors and Trellises

You can increase the greenery in your garden by adding a trellis for vines. You can either buy one or make one; just be sure that whatever you plant will be within the weight limit of the trellis. Be sure to get a strong one because heavy plants such as melon, squash, and other vining vegetables do very well on trellises. You want the structure to be able to hold everything up.

Of course, you’ll want to sit and enjoy all that new greenery, too. What better way to do so than by lounging under a leafy arbor? Place some comfortable chairs and a table there, and you’ve got yourself a lovely spring and summer outdoor dining area.

Hang Feeders and Install Pollinator Plants

If there are sections of the garden you want to redo entirely, look into making them pollinator gardens. You can attract birds, bees, and butterflies, depending on your chosen plants. Consider adding a hummingbird feeder and a bird bath, along with feeders for other birds in the area. Remember that the sugar solution in the hummingbird feeder should not contain dyes.

Increase Privacy With a Shrubbery Privacy Screen

If you’ve got gaps in plantings between your yard and your neighbor’s, fill those in with fast-growing shrubs. If you prefer to block your neighbor’s view of your yard, look for varieties that grow tall and grow out. These can also muffle sounds somewhat. Some shrubs are perfect for screens between your property and busy roads. You won’t be able to block out all traffic sounds, but the shrubs may take the edge off the constant noise.

Make at Least Part of Your Garden Edible

Along with planting strawberries and tomatoes in those containers mentioned before, consider transforming part of your garden into a mini orchard, vineyard, or even a vegetable patch. It can take a few years for fruit trees to produce fruit, but it’s worth it in the end. Imagine being able to go into your backyard to pick the apples you need for a pie or crumble instead of having to drive to a store, or being able to harvest a bunch of peaches or cherries; the taste of freshly picked fruit can be amazing.

Making a Budget: Where to Start, Where to Prioritize

If you do not have a budget, now is the time to create one. Doing so may sound like a boring task, but it will make a significant difference in your life. Imagine having enough money each month to meet all of your expenses without having to worry. And a budget isn’t only for rent, utilities, and food. A good budget helps you put aside money for entertainment and even savings. So while making a budget doesn’t sound like much fun, it will boost your quality of life.

Determine Your Net Income

Before you start listing expenses, you need to know your exact monthly income. That means subtracting the taxes you owe from your gross income to arrive at your net income. Your employer lists that amount on your paystubs, but if you are an independent contractor or freelancer, you will need to estimate your yearly income and subtract your expected taxes, including the self-employment tax. You can also roughly figure out how many deductions you will have at year’s end.

List Your Fixed Expenses

Your fixed expenses are those bills you have to pay each month. Utilities, rent/mortgage, food, childcare, loan payments, and insurance are some common fixed expenses. Like it or not, you have to cover them in order to survive. Many gas and electric companies let you pay on budget billing, which means they average your costs for a year. That way you can better plan this expense and not be stunned by your January or July bills.

An average budget might call for 30% of net income to go for housing, 15% on food, and 10% on utilities. Some geographical areas have much higher housing costs than others, so this division may need to be adjusted.

List Your Variable Expenses

These expenses are those you may feel are necessary, such as a gym membership, but could be left out of your budget if you need to. Gifts, clothing, and dining out are other variable expenses. You may consider them covered by your disposable income or income spent on items that you want but do not strictly need. You should also put aside some money in savings each month for an emergency.

Reconcile Your Income with Your Budget

When you add up your fixed and variable expenses, you may find that they exceed your monthly income. That means you have to put the excess expenses on credit cards or otherwise go into debt each month to meet your obligations. The hardest part of making a budget is setting your limits and sticking to them.

If you need to make cuts, go through your variable expenses and decide where you can economize. Maybe you can spend less on clothing, cut some of your streaming services, or limit eating out to twice a month.

You can also look at your fixed expenses and see if you can economize on heating and cooling (setting the thermostat differently) and lower your grocery bill by buying in bulk. When you are finished with your budget it needs to be one you can stick to.

Budgets are Best

Some people avoid budgets because they do not want to face the reality of their financial situation. That’s a common and understandable reaction. But putting together a reasonable budget should leave you money to pay for everything you must have and some of what you want.

Camas Farmer’s Market Kicks Off Season 17 on June 5

Camas, WA — The 17th season of the Camas Farmer’s Market begins on Wednesday, June 5th in Downtown Camas. All are invited to celebrate at the official ribbon cutting with Camas Mayor Steve Hogan and founding Board President Shannon Van Horn at 3pm. The 2024 season will bring back fan favorite farmers, artisan food producers, and prepared food vendors, as well as offer free activities for kids, live music, and abundant opportunities for community connection and healthy living education. Opening day will also feature many health and wellness businesses at the Ripple Wellness Health Fair. The market runs each Wednesday, 3 pm-7 pm, from June 5th through October 2nd. Shoppers can find the market at 625 NE 4th Ave, in front of the Camas Public Library.

The market will feature over 50 unique vendors over the course of the 18-week season and highlights the wide variety of foods being grown and produced within the community. Shoppers will find sustainably harvested farm-to-table produce, flowers, berries, and honey, in addition to hand crafted foods including artisanal breads and treats, locally made wines and vinegars, hot sauces, beef jerky, and probiotic beverages. The selection of prepared food available at the market offers something for every taste, including Greek, Hawaiian, new American, Mexican, Italian, and Columbian. Vendors accept cash and credit cards at their booths and participating farms also accept WIC/Senior benefits cards. SNAP beneficiaries can start their shopping trip at the Information booth at the corner of 4th and Everett, to take advantage of the SNAP Market Match Program, where they can receive up to $25 additional match dollars for fresh market produce.

The market will host two new events in 2024. The community is invited to connect with local aid organizations on June 26th from 3 pm-7 pm at the Community Food & Resource Fair within the market. Anyone interested in finding new and interesting local volunteer opportunities will enjoy the Volunteer Fair on August 21st from 3 pm-7 pm. These events are in addition to the longtime favorite market events including Berry Days on July 10th, Veggie Fest & Veggie Derby on August 7th, and the Harvest Festival on October 2nd. Many beloved Camas Farmer’s Market vendors will return. Yacolt Farm and Nursery will be back for their eleventh year, with their fruits and vegetables produced with the aid of draft horsepower, in lieu of modern farming equipment.  Grass fed beef and pork ranchers Windy River Livestock will once again offer cuts by the pound, and in special package pricing. Family-run Melted Crumbs will return with their popular menu of handmade Columbian empanadas and lemonades made with local fruit.

This season will also bring many new vendors to the market. Mark Simpson from Wind Acres will share his love of superfoods, and selling his curated selection of microgreens, mushrooms, and heirloom tomatoes. Artisan bread lovers can take home a handmade loaf from Bakehouse Sourdough, owned by small batch baker Kendra Hofseth. Dining options in the market continue to expand, with the addition of Husubis’ Poke Shop. Founder Kim Ngyuen is looking forward to bringing a taste of Hawaii with a touch of PNW to Camas Farmer’s Market Shoppers.

Visitors are encouraged to shop, dine, and connect with their community in the market.  Live music performed by local talent is scheduled each week from 5 pm-7 pm. Kids ages 3-11 can complete a fun educational activity at the Kids Connection Booth and receive a free $2 token good for fruits and veggies from their choice of farm vendors. Community partners will offer different engagement opportunities each week including health screenings, community garden tours, and chef demos.

Parkersville Day 2023: Come See What’s New on June 1

Camas & Washougal, WA — The third annual Parkersville Day, Saturday, June 1, from noon to 3 pm, offers something for everyone. This free family-friendly event is held at Parker’s Landing Historical Park located at 24 A Street, Washougal, adjacent to and on the west side of the Camas-Washougal Port Marina. This year’s event features the local history of Columbia River travel.

Parkersville Day will start with an opening ceremony that honors Chinook history and features a 31-foot Chinook canoe on site.  There are fun family games that were played at the park in 1880 with historic candy and event souvenir prizes. Storytellers will bring local history alive with tales of the people and activities that were a part of the rich past of Parkersville. Visitors can join WSU park tours identifying plants and trees, enjoy a display of winners from the Washougal Schools art contest and listen to a performance of the Washougal High School band.

A square dance demonstration is new to the event. The group, Happy Hoppers, was founded in 1959 and is one of the larger clubs in Washington State. Square dancing became vital for generations of Americans up to the late 1800s before falling out of favor. After World War II, square dancing enjoyed participants numbering in the millions and continues to today, boosting fun with health and social benefits.

Also new this year is a Good Humor ice cream pushcart complete with umbrella. 

“The event always has ice cream to honor the Parker’s Landing Dairy that was there until 1942 around the time of pasteurization,” explained Susan Tripp, event organizer. 

While the Parker’s Landing Dairy was operating in the early 1920s, confectioner Harry Burt of Youngstown, Ohio created a chocolate coating compatible with ice cream. His daughter told him it tasted great but was too messy to eat. Burt’s son suggested freezing the sticks used for their Jolly Boy Suckers, Burt’s earlier invention, to make a handle for the ice cream treat. Things took off from there.

The Good Humor name reflected the founder’s belief that a person’s humor or temperament was related to the humor of the palate (a.k.a., your sense of taste). Soon after the Good Humor bar was created, Burt outfitted a fleet of twelve street vending trucks with freezers and bells from which to sell his creation. The first set of bells came from his son’s bobsled. Good Humor bars have been sold since then out of everything from tricycles to push carts to trucks. In the early years around 1936, Good Humor men were required to tip their hats to ladies and salute gentlemen. It took three days of training and orientation to become a Good Humor Man. Good Humor started an ice cream revolution with the first ice cream on a stick, and the very first ice cream truck. 

Today, one can find Good Humor ice cream at stores locally such as Fred Meyer and Safeway. The ice cream cart at Parkersville Day will offer the Good Humor Chocolate Éclair bar, Creamsicle, and Strawberry Shortcake bars as well as a non-dairy ice cream sandwich, and orange juice bars.

There will be interesting displays at the event staffed by community organizations who have an interest in the park at Parkers Landing. Community Garden Club of Camas/Washougal who tend to the park’s gardens, Soroptimist International of Camas-Washougal who beautify the historic silo planter each year, WSU Master Gardeners who run the Clark County Heritage Trees program, Chinook Indian Nation, Clark County Historical Museum, Two Rivers Heritage Museum, Daughters of the Pioneers of Washington, and the Parkersville National Historic Site Advisory Committee to the Port. Camas Scout Troop 562 will run the family games along with volunteers from the Rotary Club of Camas-Washougal and the Camas Lions Club.

29 Camas Businesses Announce Launch of Explore Camas Passport

Camas, WA – Camas business owners are excited to announce the launch of the Explore Camas Passport, a program designed to reward consumers for shopping and dining local. The official launch date for the Summer 2024 Explore Camas passport is June 1, 2024. This unincorporated group of business owners met in January 2024 to brainstorm ways to collaborate and promote the vast array of businesses and services throughout Downtown Camas. 

The Explore Camas Passport is a fun way to engage and reward the community for supporting local. Passport holders collect stamps from participating locations through making a purchase, taking a class, or joining in on an activity. After accumulating at least 20 stamps, the passport holder is then eligible for a special discount or offer from each of those locations. Completed passports are submitted to the Camas-Washougal Chamber of Commerce by September 30th to be entered into the Grand Prize Drawing valued at over $1500.

The Launch Party for the Summer Passport is Saturday, June 1. Look for Red Balloons throughout Downtown Camas identifying participating locations.

Crown Park Improvements Groundbreaking Ceremony Set for June 14

Camas, WA — The City of Camas is inviting the public to the Crown Park Improvement Project groundbreaking ceremony on  June 14, 2024, at 1:30 pm. Light refreshments will be served, and staff will be available to share information on the project. 

Crown Park, considered by many as the “Crown Jewel” of the city’s entire parks system, hosts many of the City’s special events, such as the annual Camas Egg Scramble, summer Concerts and Movies In The Park, and the Camtown Youth Festival. But at the core, this is a family gathering spot for birthdays, reunions, picnics, and play for all. Crown Park was donated to the citizens of Camas, WA in 1934 by Crown Willamette Paper Company. 

At 90 years-old, this park is ready for a rejuvenation, say supporters of the improvement project, which will cost $6.3 million.  This project is partially funded thanks to a generous $500,000 grant award from the State of Washington’s Recreation and Conservation Office and a $2,500 grant from the Parks Foundation of Clark County.to provide new amenities and repair the aging infrastructure, such as improving ADA accessibility and adding bathrooms. 

The 2018 Crown Park Master Plan (Master Plan) serves as a vision of the park for the next generation of users and is used as a framework to guide future funding decisions. Over a 13-month design process, Crown Park Public Advisory Committee, Technical Advisory Committee, Parks and Recreation Commission (Commission) and the general public were engaged to provide feedback and direction. On Oct. 24, 2018, the Commission reviewed and recommended the final Master Plan report to City Council for approval. On Nov. 5, 2018, Council adopted the 2018 Crown Park Master Plan(External link) (Master Plan).

Crown Park has a magnificent grove of mature trees consisting of approximately 75 year-old Douglas Firs, Western Red Cedars, Redwoods, Gian Sequoias, Zelkovas, Blue Spruces and a variety of Maples. The Master Plan was designed with an eye toward protecting the trees and highlighting our tree assets.

The Crown Park Master Plan consists of the following:

  • Inclusive playground
  • Interactive water feature
  • Permanent restrooms
  • Outdoor amphitheater
  • Sports court
  • Flexible open lawn
  • New ADA accessible pathways
  • Access improvements to Scout Hall
  • New site furnishings
  • Upgraded irrigation system
  • Stormwater management gardens and updated plantings

In addition, the Camas Parks Foundation will also be fundraising through an “Adopt A Bench” program at Crown Park. There are 18 benches available for adoption, visit: https://www.camasparksfoundation.org/adopt-a-bench.
