Camas, WA — Beginning Friday, February 19, the Liberty Theatre will resume regular showings at their historic venue. This article contains all new show listings for week of February 19-25.
The main theatre will operate at 25% occupancy, which is 75 seats per showing and the Granada Studio will operate with only 7 persons per show. The Downtown Camas Association (DCA) and local merchants have been busy this week preparing for February’s First Friday, which is A Chocolate Affair to Remember!
Chocolate treats, art shows, candy themed activities, after hours shopping, prizes, and more will all be a part of the First Friday event in Downtown Camas in February, says the DCA.
Virtual activities started on Monday, February 1st and in-person First Friday activities are today from 5-8 pm. Downtown businesses will be serving and selling chocolate delights and other romantic gifts with wine and specials at select locations, as well.

Washougal, WA — For the first time ever, Washington State and Oregon held Blood Donor Day on December 18 to commemorate the Amtrak 501 passenger train heading from Seattle to Portland that was tragically derailed on December 18, 2017, prompting immediate action by first responders to aid everyone aboard the train. Injured passengers were transported to local hospitals, and cared for with the blood donations made by our community. The care provided was only possible because our shelves were stocked, weeks prior, with enough blood.
“But our efforts to keep a health and safe blood supply doesn’t end there,” said Lauren Reagan, of Bloodworks. ”Bloodworks needs all donors to keep donating throughout the winter season to help our preparedness plan and be ready for anything. Donating blood is a simple act that can mean so much to those in need.”
Today’s special day is also preparation for January, which is National Blood Donor Month.
“January is National Blood Donor Month, so what better time to make a donation and impact someone’s life? That “someone” could be a loved one or friend,” said Reagan. “It’s the time of year when local blood supplies are dipping due to high patient demand. Don’t wait until a person close to you needs blood, act now by giving at a Pop-Up Donor Center near you.
The next Pop-Up Donor Center will be held January 4 and 5 at the Black Pearl on the Columbia, which is located at 56 South 1st Street, Washougal, WA 98671. Hours are 8:30-2:30 pm each day.
All donations are by appointment only. The one hour donation appointment is a safe and essential action to support local hospitals and patients. The pop-up centers are being conducted in accordance with social distancing guidelines. No walk-ins, guests, or people under age 16 are permitted onsite. Washougal, WA — City of Washougal continues to innovate to keep the holiday spirit alive with the creation of two new events to help families welcome the season.
“We had to cancel our traditional Downtown Washougal Christmas Tree Lighting and Lighted Parade due to COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings but felt it was still important to reach out to the community,” said Rose Jewell, event coordinator. “Our two new special holiday celebrations have been designed to help our community enjoy safe, socially distanced connections and bring some joy at this time of uncertainty.”
The annual Christmas Tree Lighting at Reflection Plaza will be held virtually on Thursday, December 3 at 6 p.m. The event will include duets performed by Mary Templeton, Washougal School District Superintendent and community member Rod London and will culminate with Santa, Washougal Mayor Molly Coston, and several other special guests pushing the big red button to power the 40-foot lighted tree at the Plaza. The entire event will be available to watch via live stream on the City of Washougal Facebook page at facebook.com/WashougalGov.
Then on Saturday, December 5 the City will hold the new “Ho Ho Holiday Drive-Thru at the Plaza” from 2-4pm on Pendleton Way between C and Main Streets.
“Santa will be there in his sleigh to wave to families who will drive past,” explained Jewell. “Then, city officials will be handing out safely prepared goodie bags for each child in the cars. We can’t hold a big parade, but we hope having Santa available to say hello will create a special afternoon for our Washougal families.”

Washougal, WA — The eerie sound of chains rattling, footsteps across a wooden floor, actors voicing character dialog and a healthy dose of imagination. These are just some of the elements that will bring “Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol – A Radio Play” to life by the Jemtegaard Middle School Soundstage students and staff.
“Last spring our Soundstage club was supposed to perform The Box by Lindsay Price and then of course COVID happened,” said Diana Larson, Soundstage creator and advisor. “It was a big disappointment. We had the scenery ready and everything. We considered a mini version, but it just would not have been the same.”
Not wanting to disappoint the students again, it was decided to perform a radio play this fall. “We found that there were a lot of radio show scripts out this year,” said Larson. “We were excited to find this classic holiday story and it even came with sound effects. We decided to do it!”
Soundstage club members were ready for the challenge, having met over the summer with upwards of 20 students attending the weekly sessions. Larson used her connections with actors, singers, and dancers from New York through her years in vocal training to connect her students on Zoom to professionals in the entertainment industry. “We had online dance instruction, sing-a-longs, monolog sessions and even had a very special guest, Juliana Conte, a singer/dancer who has appeared in New York in Spring Awakening and the Adams Family,” she said. John Armor, Shakespearean actor and stage combat choreographer for Portland Opera and other theater companies, also provided virtual lessons over the summer.
The radio show was cast via virtual auditions in October. “The great thing for students is that no one has to work to memorize the lines,” said Larson. “They will read them as their character. There will be no visuals, just the listeners’ imagination.”
Rounding out the cast will be several notable special guests. John Hugill, a local Portland actor, will anchor the show and perform the lead role of Ebenezer Scrooge. JMS principal, David Cooke, will read the part of Bob Cratchit and WSD Superintendent Mary Templeton will voice Mrs. Cratchit. Other JMS staff participating include History teachers Scott Rainey and Scott Hoisington.
“The student actors were outstanding,” said Templeton. “They came to the recording prepared. They knew their lines, their characters and had vocal presence. They created a presentation that is artistic and engaging.”
Each actor will record their part via Zoom and then it will be professionally edited together, with sound effects, for the final product. “Our sound engineer, Vic Sorisio, is doing the recording and editing,” said Larson. “He also coached the students to understand how they need to sit and speak during their recording for the best sound quality.”
Recordings took place November 2 and 5 and the show will be available online on the Washougal School District website on December 4. Just in time for the holidays.
“My goal is to provide these students an opportunity to be a part of a production and experience that joy and satisfaction,” said Larson. “I also hope that the show brings our community together with a shared holiday experience.”

Treadway Events announced today “The Cinema of Horrors: Drive-In Experience,” a new contactless, Halloween experience is coming to the Clark County Fairgrounds & Event Center. This unique horror movie drive-in series offers a COVID-19 safe way to celebrate Halloween in 2020. The month-long event features twelve of the scariest horror blockbuster movies and combines real live actors, over the top lighting and special effects throughout the film each night.
Since many indoor haunted houses and Halloween parties canceled, this is the next best option for many thrill-seekers.
“Our team has been working on a variety of ways to pivot from our normal indoor haunted house events since COVID-19 gathering bans went into effect. We’re excited to be able to bring Halloween and horror fans together to enjoy our favorite horror films and safely celebrate Halloween with scares along the way,” says Brandon Treadway, President & Creative Director at Treadway Events.
The Cinema of Horrors Drive-In will run for twelve nights, weekends in October. Tickets are on sale now at a discounted rate of $49.00 per vehicle. Prices rise to $59.00 on October 1st, 2020. Since tickets went on sale, most shows have already hit nearly 50% capacity. There are no age limits, but parents are encouraged to use discretion based on the film rating each night.

New flavors are coming to Downtown Camas! To bring some extra culinary excitement to the community in September, participating downtown restaurants will be offering Fair Food Week from September 4th – 11th and The Secret Menu Event from September 15th – 30th.
Fair Food Week:
Since Camas Days and the Clark County Fair couldn’t happen this year, Downtown Camas restaurants are offering nostalgic and much-missed fair foods and treats on their menus for a full week starting on First Friday, 9/4. Funnel cakes, mini corn dogs, ice cream, caramel apples, cannolis just to name a few. There will even be cotton candy margaritas and Smoked BBQ ice cream to add unique twists to traditional fair options.
“We’re wanting to bring some fun and unique dining options to downtown and add a little extra zest to late summer,” says Carrie Schulstad, Executive Director of the Downtown Camas Association. “We have amazing restaurants and coffee houses that are working so hard to serve the community during these challenging times. We want to take advantage of the good dining weather and we truly hope people enjoy all the food options and have fun with it. You can have something new to try every day in September!”
The Liberty Theatre will also be serving their famous popcorn on First Friday and Saturday (9/4 – 9/5) from 5-8pm and Caps N’ Taps will kick off the Fair Food Week with free fair games out front of their taproom during the evening. Cedar Street Bagel Co will be selling “Clark County Fair” scent candle wax melts with notes of cotton candy, funnel cakes and deep fried twinkies.

For two weeks starting 9/15, participating Downtown Camas restaurants will offer secret menu items. Just ask for the secret menu offering and it will be a surprise until it is brought to your table. Items will be available for takeout as well. The goal is to bring new flavors, fun engagement for customers and some culinary adventure to the community.
Washougal WA — Washougal Arts and Culture Alliance will host an online art festival as an alternative to its annual August event cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic public gathering restrictions.
“We are very excited that our virtual 2020 Washougal Art Festival will last not just one day, but the entire month of August,” said WACA president, Kelli Rule. “Our website will be the hub, and from there people will be able to access the festival through our Facebook and Instagram pages.”
The goal of WACA’s art festivals is to create exposure and drive sales for local and regional artists. According to Rule, artists have pushed themselves to create exclusive videos, new and refreshed websites and more to help promote their art in a new way online. “We hope our community will support these local artisans, hard hit by the cancellation of so many opportunities to sell their art,” Rule said. “We’ll do our best through social media to give the artists the attention they deserve. When you purchase original artwork, you are not only buying that object, but you’re investing in that person.”
The event will highlight the work of 25 artists, each selected to participate by a jury of art professionals. 2020 festival artists are Linda Andrews-Riggs, water color; Eric Berlin, porcelain jewelry; Shirley Bishop, fused glass; Jean Blatner, watercolor acrylic; India de Landa, plexiglass acrylic jewelry; Chrissie Forbes, found art & oils, Katy Fenley, silver jewelry; Kyla Rae Friedrichsmeyer, watercolor & ink; Anni Furniss, mixed media; John Furniss, woodworking; Suzanne Grover, pen & colored pencil; Charlene Hale, fused glass; Kellie Kuter, mixed media; Brenda Lindstrom, oil; Beck Lipp, woodworking; Toni McCarthy, jewelry; Diane Moeglein, fused glass; Liz Pike, oil on canvas; Spike Palmer, oil painting; Karen Reule, silver jewelry; Gary Suda & Pamela Hancock, ceramics; Tamra Sheline, watercolor on yupo; Hiroko Stumpf, watercolor & acrylic; Cyndee Starr, mixed media; Barbara Wright, water color, ink, pencil; Jeff Wirth, photography; and Tom West, acrylic, stationery.
Each year a local artist is selected to create an image for the event poster that reflects Washougal in some way. This year’s poster art of a deer among tall grass was drawn by Washougal artist, Suzanne Grover, a founding member of WACA, whose work will be a part of the virtual festival. Her beautiful spring meadow scene was created from the photography of John Rakestraw. Signed posters are available for a $20 donation. There is a limited number of signed posters from previous festivals available as well, which can be purchased directly from WACA by emailing [email protected].
“This year has been hard for artists who have seen so many fairs, festivals and events cancelled,” Rule explained. “Artists have not been able to meet potential customers face-to-face and we know it is hard for them to make connections. We hope this virtual event will help in some small way.”
