Journey Theater Presents A Wonderful Life, The Musical — Coming Soon

Frank Capra’s film classic has been brought to vibrant theatrical life through the remarkable collaboration of Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winner Sheldon Harnick and Grammy and Emmy Award-winner Joe Raposo. The story of George Bailey and his wonderful life in Bedford Falls remains a timeless fable of dreams, disillusionment and the power of love. An uplifting chronicle of the extraordinary lives of ordinary folk, A WONDERFUL LIFE exhilarates the mind and heart as it celebrates the innate goodness in us all.

Events: Washougal’s Pumpkin Harvest Festival Coming October 26

Washougal, WA — The City of Washougal is inviting local families to the annual Downtown Washougal Pumpkin Harvest Festival on Saturday, October 26 from noon to 3 p.m. at Reflection Plaza.  Everyone is encouraged to come in their Halloween costume.   The event will take place rain or shine and is presented by City of Washougal.

Nearly 1,000 free pumpkins will be available for children thanks to generous donations from Columbia River Realty, Dental Excellence and support from City of Washougal.  A straw hay maze will be created for kids to walk through to select their special pumpkin.  Pumpkins are limited to one per child, while supplies last.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.

“The Washougal community really enjoys our family fun events such as The Pumpkin Harvest Festival,” said Rose Jewell, event organizer and City of Washougal Assistant to the City Manager. “It continues to grow with more sponsors and partners and each year we add new fun activities!”

The event will feature carnival games with candy and toy prizes, balloon animal makers sponsored by IQ Credit Union, apples donated by Washougal Family Dental, popcorn from the Washougal Fire Department, safety treat bags from Washougal Police Department, a selfie station and more.  Other sponsors include Rivertalk Weekly and Washougal Business Association.

Official Unveiling of the White Wing Mural in Honor of Betsey Ough

The City of Washougal is inviting the community to celebrate the city’s history and its newest piece of public art with the official unveiling of the White Wing Mural in honor of Betsey Ough, Wednesday, October 9 at 4 pm.  The ceremony will take place in front of the piece, located outside the Washougal Library at 1661 C Street, Washougal.  A reception will follow in the Washougal Community Center next door. 

“If you are familiar with Washougal’s history, you know that Betsey White Wing Ough, a Cascades Tribe princess, along with her husband Richard Ough, founded our great city,” said Jim Cooper, Washougal Arts and Culture Alliance board president.  “For her role, Betsey is lovingly referred to by many as the ‘Mother of Washougal.’ The theme of the mural is Richard Ough courting Betsey White Wing Ough.” 

WACA spearheaded the effort and lead fund raising for the work. 

Mural artist Toma Villa is an internationally renowned Native American artist.  He will attend the dedication and share his thoughts about White Wing and how he developed the 8’-11” x 25’ scene.  “Through my extensive research on Betsey Ough (White Wing) of the Washougal people, I found her story inspiring on a personal level,” he said. “What it shows is how love can change one’s life and what can be created from it.” 

Inspiration came in part from a quote describing Richard Ough’s feelings for the young princess. “…he thought he could see White Wing in the clouds and in the forest and in his dreams.  He said, “Come pretty bird and fly with me, for I am lonely, and my nest is empty.”

For the mural, Villa chose to feature the egret bird to represent White Wing for its beauty and grace. “I used seven of them for that is a significant number in Columbia River longhouses,” he explained. “They are facing East; of the way the wind blows on the river. The baskets are from the Two Rivers Heritage Museum and are part of a greater collection in Washougal, accenting the mural representative of White Wing as a weaver same as her grandmother.” 

The unveiling and dedication ceremony program will begin with a Washaat Prayer by Members of the Yakima Nation, White Swan Longhouse in the tradition of their native heritage. In addition to Villa, speakers will include Washougal Mayor, Molly Coston speaking about how influential White Wing was as a woman and native landowner in early Clark County.  

Former Washougal City Council member, Joyce Lindsay, will also speak on the impact and attention drawn to Native American cultures by efforts such as the Confluence and the inspiration that led WACA to work with the artist that would memorialize Princess White Wing in this colorful mural.  

Another speaker will be Elder Johnnie Lee Wyman, who will represent the Yakima Nation and is a Great Great Grandson of Richard and Betsey Ough through their son, Benjamin Ough.  Wyman will speak on behalf of his family about the significance of this gift in honor of White Wing and how it impacts her future generations.

Attendees of the ceremony are invited to meet and greet the Ough family descendants, artist Toma Villa, city leaders, and the WACA board at the reception following in the Washougal Community Center – 1681 C Street.  Additional historic information will be provided at the reception by the Two Rivers Heritage Museum.

Artist Liz Pike Coming to Several Fall Shows Starting Today in Downtown Camas

CAMAS, WA — Artist Liz Pike will be painting at the Downtown Camas Plein Air Art Event on Fri., Sept. 6 from 9 am to 4 pm. Her finished work, along with 30 other artists will be viewed by the public that evening from 5-8 pm at Camas Art Gallery, 408 NE Fourth Avenue, where the community will vote for its favorites.

Finished pieces will be auctioned off at Camas Dinner in White the following evening.  Camas Gallery is also featuring a “dual artist” live paint demonstration on Friday night by Liz Pike and fellow Artist Sarah Bang starting at 4:30 pm. Each artist starts on a painting and then every 15 minutes, switches places until the painting is complete. This activity is a crowd favorite at Camas First Friday.

On Sat., Sept. 7, Pike will display new works at the Old Town Battle Ground Vintage Art Faire from 11 am to 5 pm. She will be doing a live painting demonstration in oils on canvas at her art booth located in the Urban Basics parking lot, 209 East Main Street in downtown Battle Ground. Pike’s work will also be featured in a four-day show at the Portland Fall Home & Garden Show at the Expo Center in Portland, Oct. 3-6.

David is the engaging host and writer of the 13-show national PBS television series, Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop, for which he won an Emmy and a CINE Golden Eagle Award in 2009. In 2017, the second series was nominated for an Emmy. Landscapes Through Time is distributed  internationally and returned to U.S. national television in 2018. Both series were produced by SimmonsArt and directed by Connie Simmons and the first was also co-produced by Connecticut Public Television. David is also the host, artist and writer in several other  multi-DVD series on painting landscapes produced by SimmonsArt, blogs regularly, and has a devoted following on YouTube.

David has been a painting teacher at Silvermine Art Guild for many years and has a devoted following around the world.  He teaches workshops on many varied topics throughout the world as well.

David graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the College of Wooster, Wooster, OH, and was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus in 2011. He earned an MFA from The Pratt Institute, NY, NY. He is on the faculty of the Silvermine School of Art in New Canaan, CT, where he teaches, lectures, and leads workshops, as far afield as Italy, France, Spain and Japan. He was honored with their Living Art Award in 2017. David lives in Wilton, CT, with his wife, Rebecca Hoefer.

Plein Air & Art Event Happening All Day at Camas First Friday

New art additions to the Downtown Camas “Plein Air & Art Event” for September 6th’s Camas First Friday will have people enthralled and dancing in the streets. As in prior years, plein air (open air) artists will set up their easels in Downtown Camas and paint downtown buildings or landscapes from 9 am to 4pm. Accomplished local artists and multiple live music venues will be featured throughout downtown, as well. New this year will be “dual artist” live paintings and free dance lessons with local dance instructor Daniel Martinez. 

The finished plein air art pieces will be on display at the Camas Gallery, 408 NE 4th, from 5-8 pm that evening. The community will vote for its favorites and “People Choice Awards” will be given. These works of art will then be auctioned off at the Dinner in White on the Columbia, a benefit for the Washougal Library Building Fund, on Saturday, September 7that Marina Park at the Port of Camas Washougal.

Other art features, music, and activities that night are: 

  • Elida Field’s “Art, Women & Wine” artists will be showcased in participating merchant locations; Meet the artists, enjoy the art, and be entered to win prizes from the merchants. Participation lists can be found at the DCA table in Journey at 304 NE 4th Ave. Look for stores with the red balloons.
  • Local dance instructor Daniel Martinez will be offering FREE dance lessons for the community sponsored by the Downtown Camas Association. Come learn dance steps that you might even use with the outdoor live music that night. Meet at Body Bliss Yoga Studio at 417 NE Birch at 6pm for the lessons. Everyone is invited. Daniel is known for his fun and engaging classes and the DCA is glad to partner to bring this art form to the event.
  • Outdoor dining and live music with 4 bands sponsored by Nuestra Mesa from 5-9pm, 228 NE 4th.
  • Camas Gallery will be hosting two “dual artist” live paintings starting at 4:30pm with two paintings each being done by popular local artists. Two will be painted by Anna Norris and Heidi Curley and another two being created by Liz Pike and Sarah Bang. Each artist starts on a painting and then every 15 minutes, switches places with their painting partner until they feel the painting is complete. This art activity is a crowd favorite.
  • Art Show in Attic Gallery featuring Emmy Award winning artist David Allen Dunlopwho will also be plein air painting the mill during the day. There will also be the dynamic live classical music of the Lily Burton String Trio.
  • Art Guessing Game in select locations–guess the artist of a picture of a famous piece of artwork and be entered to win.
  • Open Mic Night at Journey Church, 6-8pm. Sing a song, play guitar or do a stand-up comedy routine. Each performer has 10 minutes to perform. This is a ‘family friendly’ event so youth are welcome to participate. Sign-ups start at 5:30pm. 
  • The Hidden Bronze Bird Tour will have a twist with each of the 14 bronze birds in Downtown Camas showing off something for the night. Find the birds and find out what they have and be entered to win a special prize basket. 
  • Kids’ art crafts, including The Paint Roller Mobile Paint Party where children can paint rocks; chalk art; and the sixth annual DCA First Friday Coloring Contest. 
  • Live music at multiple locations throughout downtown including Birch Street Uptown Lounge, Salud Wine Bar and A Beer at a Time.
  • Shop, dine, & have artful fun in Downtown Camas

This Friday: Shangri-La Farm Hosts Hootenanny to Benefit Artstra

Shangri-La Farm in Camas invites you to a country style fundraising Hootenanny event to benefit Artstra. Enjoy a fabulous western BBQ Cowboy Dinner and homemade pie! Wear your cowboy attire and try your luck at a game of chicken poop bingo! The fun begins at 6 pm this Friday, August 30.

Artstra rented the airport parking lot (ADA parking only at the farm, 26300 NE Third St., Camas.) From the airport, follow the meandering trail 1/4 mile through the woods to Shangri-La Farm or take the free shuttle service to the farm. There are 24 squares on the bingo board and attendees have at least two bingo games. Game 1 tickets are $10 and Game 2 tickets are $20. Half the cash collected for each game goes to the holder of the winning ticket and the other half goes to Artstra. Annual Camas Vintage & Art Faire Returns August 24 — to Downtown

The 11th annual Camas Vintage & Art Faire will return to the charming tree-lined streets of Downtown Camas this year on Saturday, August 24th, from 9 am-3 pm. This event brings over 60 vintage and art vendors that fill the downtown streets with vintage, antique and repurposed items as well as many local artists bringing a wide collection of art offerings and styles. 

Vintage vendors will showcase a large variety of home and garden items and indoor and outdoor furniture and decor as well as clothing, jewelry and accessories. Art selections include professional quality paintings, metal work, ceramics, garden art, photography, handmade jewelry, fiber art, recycled art, and more. Bret Malmquist will perform jazz guitar music from 10 am-12 pm and the Carol Rossio Jazz Trio with many songs in French will perform from 12:30pm-3:00pm. History Lives Series Continues w/ Blagg, Son of Native American Artist

Cameron Blagg III, son of professional local artist, Cameron Blagg, Jr., will be the Camas-Washougal Historical Society featured speaker on Saturday, August 17 at 2 pm at the Camas Police Station Meeting Room, 2100 3rd Avenue, Camas. The presentation is part of the CWHS History Lives Series and is open to the public.  Light refreshments will be served. 

Blagg III will talk about his father’s prolific work painting Native American inspired pieces.  Blagg, Jr. grew up in Oklahoma at the edge of Cherokee and Choctow Indian Reservations. “His art is inspired by his love of western history and Native cultures,” said Blagg III. “He is always reading books to learn about the life of the old west characters.  Native Americans seem to enjoy the authenticity of his work.  He attends pow-wows and Indian markets to display and sell his art.”  

Blagg Jr. is still active in painting and occasionally sculpture. His piece depicting Native American fishing at Celio Falls can be seen in the front room at the Two Rivers Heritage Museum.  

Blagg III will also share memories of his childhood in Washougal, growing up 6.5 miles north of Bear Prairie in a canyon along the upper Washougal River. The family lived simply in a small cabin they built.  They produced their own electricity with a water wheel and used wood to heat their home and cook.

At the presentation, Blagg III will also present the CWHS with several limited-edition pieces of his father’s work. “I thought the museum could sell the artwork to raise funds,” Blagg III explained. “I really enjoy the museum.”  The collection is estimated at $7,500 in value. 

CWHS operates the Two Rivers Heritage Museum at 1 Durgan Street, Washougal WA.   Regular hours are Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. through the end of October. Sip&Paint For Good Event August 14 at Washougal’s Reflection Plaza

Budding artists are invited to learn to paint with oils on canvas with local artist, Liz Pike, at the upcoming “Sip&Paint for Good” event at Reflection Plaza in downtown Washougal.  It’s scheduled for Wednesday, August 14 and will support the Washougal Arts and Culture Alliance. It will run from 6 pm to 8:30 pm at a cost of $45 which includes all art supplies.  Space is limited to the first 25 participants who sign up and advanced registration is required.  Register by calling or texting 360-281-8720 or email [email protected].  Participants will be invited to sip on lemonade and coffee as they create their masterpieces. 

“I am excited to partner with the City of Washougal to provide Sip&Paint for Good events,” said Pike. “Washougal is a very special place.  I love that they are leading the charge on all things art in east Clark County with their murals, public art pieces and the events that promote local artists.” 

As an artist instructor, Pikes says she has just three rules: 1. Relax, 2. Have Fun, and 3. Learn Something. “I teach in oils on canvas because it’s the only medium I chose to work in,” she explained.  “I love the unmatched textures of oil paint. My students learn a little bit about composition, how to use their light source effectively on their canvas, and basic brush stroke instruction for various techniques.” 

Participants will work on small format canvases which is ideal for beginners who have not painted before. According to Pike, within a two-hour period, everyone is able to successfully complete their painting.

“They leave the event with a painting and a smile on their face,” she said.

Pike’s students appreciate her relaxed teaching style and how with just some basic instruction, they can create a beautiful painting in their own unique style. “Most people also comment on how relaxing it is to paint,” she said “They are able to clear their mind and recharge. According to Pike, many people simply think they cannot paint, or perhaps someone along the way discouraged them or they’ve just been afraid to try something new.
